Born in South Dakota on December 29, 1920, Vernon was the only son and youngest child of Ernest McClary of Missouri and Shella McVay of Arkansas. About 1933, Vernon's parents moved the family to Lane County, Oregon,[1] and in 1938, he graduated from Creswell High School.
Days before his 21st birthday, Vern married (1) Roberta K. McKy in Seattle, Washington,[2]
where Vern had a factory job with Boeing.

By the summer of the following year, Roberta was pregnant, and in March of 1943, she gave birth to a bouncing baby boy

that the couple named Ronald (affectionately known to family and friends as Ronnie). Unfortunately, Roberta & Vernon's marriage was short-lived, and by September of 1944, Vernon had moved back to Oregon and enlisted in the military, declaring himself "single."
[5]
In May of the following year, he filed for divorce, citing cruel and inhumane treatment from Roberta.
[6]
During his enlistment, Vern served overseas in the Air Force, ultimately rising to the rank of corporal. He was honorably discharged in the fall of 1946

at which point he returned to Eugene and began working as an electrician. In October of 1951, he married (2) Audrey L. Rodgers in a small ceremony at the Lane County Courthouse in Eugene. From this union, 3 daughters were born: DeLynn Gay (b. 1952), Eryn Beth (b. 1957) and Pamela Rae (b. 1959).
By 1970, Vernon was a partner in Oregon Electric Service, and business was thriving. It was around this time that the couple moved from their modest home on W. 18th Ave. to a large farm just a few miles northeast, in what is now known as the Santa Clara division of Eugene.
In 1981, Vernon died[8][9][10] of prostate cancer during a hospital stay in Houston, Texas, where he had been visiting family. His body was cremated and sent back to Oregon, where he was laid to rest at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Eugene.[11]
