Biography

Canada Flag
Martha (Mabee) Neilson was born in Ontario, Canada.

Birth and Early Years

Martha Ellen Mabee was born in 10 February 1861 in Bosanquet, Huron County, Ontario, Canada.[1] Her parents were Simeon Mabee and Lydia Arnold and they had six children:

  1. Rachel Rebecca (Mabee) Fero, born about 1851[2][3], died before April 1880 (before age 29)
  2. Eveline (or Emeline) Martha Mabee, born about 1853[2][3]
  3. Rebecca (Mabee) Hodge, born about 1855[2], died before April 1889 (before age 34)
  4. Olive Mabee, born about 1857[2], died 3 December 1888 (about age 31)
  5. Oliver Mabee, born about 1859[4][5]
  6. Martha Ellen (Mabee) Neilson, born 10 February 1861, died 13 May 1942 (age 81)[1]

In 1861, Martha’s parents, Simeon (36), Labourer, and his wife, Lydia (33), lived in a one story, log house, in the Township of Bosanquet, in the County of Lambton, Canada West, Canada, with their four children: Rachel (10), Eveline (8), Rebecca (6), and Olive (4). The 1861 Census indicates that none of the children attended school.[2]

Bosanquet, named after the first Governor of the Canada Company, opened for settlement in 1830. It was originally an Indian Reserve. Development in the beginning was slow due to a lack of access. Hence, log cabins were common as late as 1870.[6]

My Uncle Don Pope told my mom, Carolyn Williams, that Lydia (Arnold) Mabee died about 1862, whilst giving birth to a boy. Martha would have been about one year old when her mother died. Martha and her siblings were then raised by other people.[7]

In 1871, Martha (10), attended school and lived with Richard Careless (51), farmer, and Fanny Careless (50) in Walsingham, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada.[8]

In 1881, Martha Mabie (18), lived with Richard Careless (60), farmer, and Hannah Careless (60), in Walshingham, Norfolk South, Ontario Canada.[9]

Richard Careless, Labourer, married Hannah Creed on 20 December 1840 in Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England.[10] It appears that Richard and Hannah did not have any children. Richard’s profession was documented as agriculture labourer in the 1841 [11] and 1851[12] Census of England for Thornbury, Gloucestershire, England. Richard’s profession is documented as farmer in the Census of Canada for Walsingham, Norfolk, Canada West, in 1861,[13] 1871, [8] and 1881.[9]

Marriage

Martha (22) married George Neilson, (27) a farmer, on 13 March 1884 in Vittoria, Ontario, Canada. [14][15]

They had 10 children:

  1. George Oliver Neilson, 1884-1885 (less than six months old)
  2. Elizabeth (Nielson) Ion, 1885-1962 (age 76)
  3. Martha Ellen (Neilson) Whitehead, 1888-1950 (age 62)
  4. Pearl (Neilson) Osborn, 1889-1959 (age 69)
  5. Lily (Neilson) Richards, 1892-1961 (age 69)
  6. Jessie (Neilson) Hellerud, 1894-1951 (age 56)
  7. Hazel (Neilson) Frost, 1897-1979 (age 82)
  8. Minnie May (Neilson) Mills, 1900-1952 (age 51)
  9. Eva Lavenia (Neilson) Simpson, 1902-1946 (age 43)
  10. Mabel (Neilson) Pope, 1905-1973 (age 67)

In 1891, Martha (27) lived in Charlotteville, Norfolk South, Ontario, Canada, with her husband, George (35), Farmer, and their children: Elizabeth (5), Martha E. (3), and Pearl (1).[16]

In 1901, George (aged 45), Farmer, and Martha (aged 38) lived in Charlotteville, Norfolk South, Ontario, Canada with their children: Elizabeth (15), Martha E. (13), Pearl (10), Lily (9), Jessie (7), Hazel (4), and Minnie (10 months).[17]

In 1911, George (aged 56), 'Farmer Ret', lived in Simcoe, Norfolk, Ontario, Canada, with his wife, Martha (aged 49), and their children: Elizabeth (aged 25), Martha (aged 23), Pearl (aged 21), Lily (aged 19), Jessie (aged 17), Ada [Hazel] (aged 14), Minnie (aged 11), Eva (aged 8), and Mabel (aged 5).[18]

In 1921, Martha (56) lived at 3 Union Street, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada, with her husband, George (64) Liveryman, and their children: Minnie (21), Eva (18), and Mabel (16).[19]

Special Interests

Martha was resourceful and practical as remembered by a story passed down in the family to me, Gwen Williams, from my mother, Carolyn Williams, as follows. Martha got a new stove and it was a big one. It was delivered to their home and her husband was away. The stove was too big to go into the house so Martha started building a new room onto the house to put the stove in. [20]This is just one example of the many "great obstacles surmounted by firm determination and resolute perseverance, which mark the lives of" many pioneers in their struggle for existence. [21]

Death and Probate

Martha died, age 81, in Simcoe, Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada on 13 May 1942 and was buried 17 May 1942[1] in Oakwood Cemetary, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada. [22]

Research Notes

  • Multiple Census documents indicate Martha’s origin as German. [8] Perhaps her mother, born in the US, was German descent.
  • There is another Martha Mabee, two years older on the 1861 Census.[23] and four years older on the 1881 Census [24] with Charles and Sarah Mabee as parents. This is not the same person as my ancestor, Martha Ellen Mabee, as it can be seen by marriage records for both ladies. My ancestor, Martha Ellen Mabee, married George Neilson. [14] Martha Mabee married James Marsan.[25]
