"All Hobbits were, in any case, clannish and reckoned up their relationships with great care. They drew long and elaborate family-trees with innumerable branches. In dealing with Hobbits it is important to remember who is related to whom, and in what degree. It would be impossible in this book to set out a family-tree that included even the more important members of the more important families at the time which these tales tell of. The genealogical trees at the end of the Red Book of Westmarch are a small book in themselves, and all but Hobbits would find them exceedingly dull. Hobbits delighted in such things, if they were accurate: they liked to have books filled with things that they already knew, set out fair and square with no contradictions."- J. R. R. Tolkien [1]

The North and West of Europe bring to mind imagery of Viking voyages and wintery landscapes. An array of populations and cultures have lived across these lands since the first inhabitants settled here, ranging from the Sami reindeer hunters of Finland and Russia to the Gallic tribes of Iron Age France. [3]
The East Iberian genetic signature spans out across eastern Spain, from Catalonia in the North to Alicante in the South. Across the whole of Iberia, there are clear genetic similarities between the North and South regions, mirroring historical North to South migrations known as the Reconquista, during which Christian-controlled territories in the north expanded to the south from the 8th century after the Muslim conquest of Iberia. However, a higher degree of differentiation is found when comparing East and West, corresponding to the linguistic regions in the Christian-ruled northern regions during the first centuries of the Muslim rule. The first people to live in East Iberia after the Ice Age were tough and resilient, living hunter-gatherer lifestyles. They most likely traveled in groups from a refuge zone not far from East Iberia - the Franco-Cantabrian Refugia. Refugia were pockets of land that were more habitable than the unrelenting icy tundra that covered Europe during the height of the Ice Age. People resided here during the most testing of times and only began to migrate across the rest of Iberia (and Europe) once the Ice Age came to an end around 11,500 years ago. Your genetic signature closely resembles the geographical region of the Crown of Aragon - a Middle Age confederation of Kingdoms composed mainly by the Kingdom of Aragon, the Kingdom of Valencia, and the Principality of Catalonia, as well as the Balearic Islands and some other regions across the Mediterranean. Most of Iberia has a significant percentage of North African DNA due to the impact of Muslim rule in Iberia from the 8th to the 15th century. However, the areas within the old Crown of Aragon have much less in comparison, which is one reason why East Iberia is genetically distinct from the rest of Iberia. [3]
The North East Europe cluster corresponds roughly to the modern territories of Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, eastern Czechoslovakia, and northern Slovakia. A land of contrasts, this area stretches from the Baltic to the Black Sea and is home to prehistoric forests, jagged mountain ranges, and undulating plains. North East Europe has always been a gateway from the Eurasian steppe into Europe, and has seen countless mass nomadic migrations across the millennia. Many of these ancient people never left, and instead were absorbed and integrated into this vibrant cultural and genetic melting pot. The boundaries of this cluster are primarily defined by the Slavic migrations in the first millennium AD. As such, similar signatures may be found in both Western Russia and parts of the Balkans. These were not the only people to historically settle the region, however. The ancient and innovative Kurgan people that probably migrated here from north of the Black Sea are thought to have introduced horse riding, chariots, and even the Indo-European language family that is now spoken from Iceland through to India! More recently, there is also genetic evidence of the Mongolian expansion into the region. This cluster, therefore, has a global heritage, with DNA signatures that originate from many different places and people across the Eurasian landmass. [3]
The islands of Great Britain and Ireland may only be a relatively small set of islands, yet its history is lavished with both cohesion and conflict. Turbulence between periods of feast, famine, peace, and warfare characterise Britain's past. From the first peopling of the peninsula to the expansion of the Roman Empire, these islands been at the centre of European history for many millennia. [3] |
I am grateful for the guidance, assistance and encouragement I have received. Astrid Spaargaren has been unfailingly helpful, and I acknowledge her contributions. I would like to thank my family including Brett George Lehman, Charné Visser, Lorna Anne Rutherford, Sarah Jane Dewer, Jacobus Frederik Visser and Isabella Susanna Krüger.
It may seem morbid, but in the event of my untimely demise I want to be sure that none of my hard work on WikiTree ends up being deleted. While I fully intend on being around to manage all my profiles for the next 80 years or so, in the event of my sudden death I hereby give permission for all of my private profiles to be transferred to any of the following slightly-active WikiTreers, whether or not they are currently on the trusted lists:

I think for now I would like to stay in level 1.
I’m not very active at the moment but I’m trying to work myself back into it.

Unfortunately I can’t join this time. I miss WikiTree and the Flying Dutchmen. I’m just taking a break. Hopefully I’ll be back soon, when the time seems right. Good luck Eef and to all the Flying Dutchmen.
Please tell Astrid I would be so happy to speak to her. Please tell her I did send her a private message just to say hi a few days ago.
Thank you for participating in the 2021 Source-a-Thon. With your help we sourced 3,098 profiles as a team. The whole WikiTree community sourced 56,972. Your help during this event and each source you add improves the site greatly.
Thank you for jumping in to help register people. It was a great help.
Michel, Astrid, and Colleen
I was happy to help with registering, I'm just sad that I didn't get to help more with sourcing. Congrats on a good job!
Francis
We have noticed that a citation by Genealogietools.nl does not always contain a correct link to the Openarch source.
Therefore we kindly ask you to remove the link to Openarch if there's already a link to the Wiewaswie website. Or check the link to Openarch.
Otherwise we need to correct all the incorrect url's afterwards.
Thank you!
I hope I didn't do anything wrong!
We posted the warning on G2G, but were afraid SaT participants would not notice it, so decided to also post on the profiles of the Anglophone SaT participants, assuming they are big users of Openarch and Genealogietools. So it was mainly in the context of the upcoming SaT. And actually you do not have that problem in the profiles you manage!

Thank you for contributing to my tree during the WikiTree Challenge this week! Yvette Hoitink
edited by Yvette Hoitink
We really need you this time! If you have time, please help.
WT is organizing weekly challenges this year under the name: “Year of Accuracy” We worked on many before but next week will be special.
If you like it or not, we need your help this week just to show what we as DRP are capable of - starting on Wednesday the 9th of June and it is during a week after, starts probably late for us Dutch (after midnight) - the challenge is to bring down brick walls for Dutch genealogist Yvette Hoitink.
She did great research on her family. This challenge is about showing we can do better!
We have, of course, already DRP members joining the challenge, but most participants are Americans. They will need help on translations, finding reliable sources, Dutch Naming Conventions (as we will dive into profiles before 1811 and probably need to use patronymics and never use Middle Names) and adding biographies. We are sure foreigners need help. And learn lots because of this challenge but they need some help from us.
Please, your help is much appreciated.

Help!
Eef, Bea en/and Astrid.
De G2G zal rond die tijd ook gestart worden, maar Je kunt, als je mee wilt doen, je naam nu al toevoegen aan de deelnemerslijst

As you have been a member of WikiTree for a few weeks now, I thought I would check in to see how you are getting on with the site.
Has the New Member How-To been helpful, or left you with any questions?
Did you know that we have a research tool that makes finding reliable sources easier? I use it all the time and it helps me remember different places to check. To give it a try, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research, scroll down near the bottom of that list, and select Research with RootsSearch (use your WikiTree email & password). There are over 20 websites to access from there. You can read more about the tool in the RootSearch FAQ.
I am here to help with any problems or queries you may have. To contact me, log into WikiTree, and go to your profile. Use the ‘Reply’ link below my comment so that I will be notified. Alternatively, you can click my name to visit my profile, where you can send a private message, or post a comment on my profile page.
Laura ~ WikiTree Greeter
We are so happy to have you here in the WikiTree family, your contributions will go a long way to joining the !world together.
I would suggest starting with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration. Don't be afraid to ask questions in our G2G forum and get involved as much or as little as works for you. Be sure to check out the tabs at the very top right hand side of your profile, there is lots to discover!
I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do!
Happy tree climbing
