Biography

Francis was born in 1898. He is the son of Robert Lea and Blanche Owen.

According to his World War 1 Draft Registration card, Francis was working as an Account Clerk for the H. Koppers Company in the Jenkins Arcade in downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Following the war, Francis married Myra Mapel from Bohemia. The 1920 United States Census enumerates the couple living in Swissvale, Pennsylvania. They moved to South Bend, Indiana sometime before 1924 where their first child, Francis K. Lea, Jr. was born. A second son, Robert Lea, named for Francis' father followed in 1928 and a daughter named Myra Jane Lea in 1934.

Francis worked as a buyer for the Bendix Production Company. Founded by Vincent Bendix in 1914, the company controlled patents for automobile brake systems, carburetors, and starting drives for engines. By 1940 when Francis worked there, Bendix sales were about $40 million.

Francis Kennedy Lea passed away in 1958. He is interred beside his beloved, Myra, at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola, St. Joseph County, Indiana.
