Biography

Mary King, daughter of Jonathan King (1683- 1774) and Mary (French) King (1686-1758) was born 31 May 1718 in Northampton, Hampshire, Massachusetts Bay Colony, [1] Mary King moved to Bolton, Connecticut as a child with her parents and their family about 1725, when her parents Jonathan and Mary (French) King are recorded as admitted to the church in Bolton. [2] [3] https://www.americanancestors.org/DB414/i/13153/186/0 Mary's parents settled in Bolton and are buried there (Jonathan died 1774, Mary (French) King died 1758)

On 3 Jun 1742 Mary King, daughter of Jonathan King and Mary (French) King, married Henry Woodward Jr., born 22 Dec 1720 at Lebanon, Connecticut, the son of Henry Woodward Sr. (1679-1762) and Hannah (Burrows) Woodward (1674-1772) of Lebanon, Connecticut. Henry Woodward Jr. and Mary (King) Woodward had a son, Henry Woodward, born 10 Aug 1743 in Lebanon, Connecticut, who died in infancy. [4] Henry Woodward Jr. and Mary (King) Woodward moved to Coventry, where they are recorded as the parents of six more children, beginning in 1745. [5]

Children of Henry Woodward and Mary (King) Woodward:

Henry, son of Henry Jr. and Mary Woodward, b. 10 Aug., 1743 Lebanon, Connecticut (died).

Henry, son of Henry Woodward, b. 4 Jun 1745, Coventry, Connecticut.

Racheal, dtr. of Henry Woodward, b. 16 Oct 1747, Coventry, Connecticut.

Oliver, son of Henry Woodward, b. 1 Oct 1749 Coventry, Connecticut.

According to the History of Tolland County (1888) "The following are matters of town record: Henry Woodward of Coventry was killed by the Indians between the half-moon and fort Mass. on the 26th day of June 1756 in the 36th year of his age." [6]

Mary (King) Woodward's whereabouts after her husband's death remain to be determined, as well as her place and date of death.

Mary (King) Woodward's son Oliver Woodward (Sr.) was married 12 Nov 1772 in Hartford Co., Connecticut, served on the patriot side during the American Revolution, saw his wife Thankful buried at Benjamin Cemetery, in Worthington, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, where they apparently lived, and then moved to Ohio, where he is buried in Yankeeburg Cemetery in Washington County, Ohio. Research Notes

There were two Mary Kings, close in age, in Bolton Connecticut between 1723 and 1745, following is a distinction of the two:

(1) The Mary King who is the subject of of this WIkitree Profile, was the daughter of Jonathan King and Mary (French) King. She was born 31 May 1718 in Northampton, Massachusetts, moved to Bolton Connecticut about 1725 when her parents were admitted to the newly-forming church there, and she married Henry Woodward Jr. in Lebanon, Connecticut 3 Jun 1742. She had a brother Oliver, and she named a son Oliver.

(2) The second Mary King was the daughter of Deacon Hezekiah King Sr. (1690-1740) [WikiTree King-222], and Sarah (Reed) King (1694-1750), who married 14 May 1712 in Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts Bay Colony, moved to Mansfield, Tolland Co., Connecticut, where they had three children, then between 1717 and 1719 moved to Bolton, Tolland Co., Connecticut, where they had nine more children, and Hezekiah was admitted to the new church in Bolton in 1725, the same year as Mary King (1)'s parents. This Mary King (2) was married in 1746 to Paul Smith, of Lyme Connecticut, and her two sons were named Hezekiah, and King.

Critical to confirming the respective husbands of these two Mary Kings is a land deed dated 4 June, 1745, which lists five children of the late Deacon Hezekiah King Sr., including "...Mary King of Bolton, children of Hezekiah King, late of Oblong, Dutchess Co., deceased." [8] Thus, Mary King (1) married Henry Woodward in 1742, prior to the deed date of 1745 that names an unmarried Mary King, daughter of Hezekiah King. Mary King (1) was the daughter of Jonathan King, and Mary King (2), the daughter of Hezekiah still carrying her maiden name in 1745, married Paul Smith the following year in 1746.

In "A genealogical history of the descendants of the Rev. Nehemiah Smith..." (1889), which contains errors, but often provides leads for further verification, the profile of Paul Smith reads as follows:

"Paul4 (Samuel3, Nehemiah2, Nehemiah1). b. and always lived on his father's farm; m. Oct. 2 1746, Mary, dau. of Hezekiah King of Coventry, Conn.; she had come down to the salt water for her health and boarded with Paul's mother. He gave each of his sons a good farm; he died Sep. 10, 1804; his wife died Dec. 10, 1805. Ch.

Mary, b. Sep. 24 1748

47. Freelove, b.

48. Sarah, b. 1758. (Called Sally.)

49. King, b. Oct 120, 1760

Lydia, b. Nov. 23, 1762; m. Abner Coles; res. Colchester; no Ch.

50. Hezekiah, b. July 24 1765.

Nancy b. (possibly should be Mercy, and married a Fargo)." [9]

All seven of these children are named in Paul Smith's will, [10] and the births four of the seven are listed in the Barbour Collection of Connecticut Vital Records for New London, Connecticut. [11]

Paul Smith and Mary (King) Smith are buried in the Old Stone Church Burying Ground, East Lyme Conn., [12] [13] as is King Smith, [14] and Sally Smith 1758-1814) Find a Grave, database and images (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/22102560/sally-smith : accessed 18 August 2021), memorial page for Sally Smith Smith (1758–14 Apr 1814), Find a Grave Memorial ID 22102560, citing Old Stone Church Burial Ground, East Lyme, New London County, Connecticut, USA ; Maintained by Annette (contributor 48858366) who married Joseph Smith (1756-1814) - originally of Montville, and possibly of the Christopher Smith line. They named one of their children Sabin King Smith (1787-1862), who is also buried in the Old Stone Church Burying Ground (Sally and Joseph died one week apart).
