Biography
Sarah was born on December 16, 1858, in Wythe County, Virginia to Smith King and Nancy (Alley) King.[1] Her early childhood was spent living with her parents and siblings,[2] but after her father's death in 1864 her family moved in with her maternal grandparents David and Sally Alley.[3]
Sarah married James Calloway Porter on July 25, 1877.[4] It is said that Sarah and James traded a sewing machine to her uncle, Hezekiah Alley, for their first home, located in the Loafers Rest Community of Wythe County.[5] They had eight children together: Robert (b. 1878), William (b. 1882; died in infancy), James I (b. 1884; died in infancy), James II (b. 1885; died in infancy), Levi (b. 1887), Ina (b. 1889; died young), Van Harrison (b. 1891, died young), and Dixie (b. 1894; died young). In addition, they housed her younger sister Nancy in 1880,[6] and her mother in 1900.[7]
It is unknown when Sarah died and where she was buried, as there are no further records of her after 1900. Being that the 1900 census is the last record she appears in, it is assumed she died sometime between 1900 and 1910.
