Biography

Nancy was born in Wythe County, Virginia to David Alley and Sarah (Norris) Alley.[1] Her exact birth date is unknown, but her birth year varies from 1827-1837.[2][3][4][5][6]

She married Smith King on August 13, 1848, in Wythe County, Virginia.[7] They spent a short amount of time living with her parents after their marriage and birth of their first child.[3] They had 6 children together, five of whom survived to adulthood: Eli, David, Sherwood, Sarah, and Nancy.[5]

Nancy was widowed after Smith died a prisoner of Camp Morton Prison on August 12, 1864. The news was brought to her by Stephen Porter, a neighbor of the Kings who had also been taken prisoner there. Mr. Porter delivered Nancy several possessions entrusted to him by Smith, including a New Testament.[1] After her husband's death, Nancy and her children moved in with her parents.[4]

She never remarried. It is said that Nancy talked about her late husband until her death. She would often visit Mr. Porter and have him retell of conversations he shared with Smith while they served the military together and were prisoners at Camp Morton Prison.[1] Around the age of seventy years, she was described as "a very small and very old looking woman...she wore old fashioned clothes; a skirt reaching to the floor; long-sleeved blouse; and a red bandana wrapped around her head. She smoked a long straight reed stemmed clay bowl pipe."[1]

After all of her children had married and moved out, she had lived with her daughter Sarah and son-in-law James Porter in Sulphur Springs.[6] She died at their home in 1905, around the age of 75.[1]
