Biography

Sherwood was born on July 25, 1856, in Wythe County, Virginia to Smith King and Nancy Alley.[1] His childhood was spent in Wythe with his family.[2] His father died when he was only 8 years old. After his father's death, he moved in with his grandparents David and Sally Alley in Speedwell.[3] As a young man, he worked in the zinc and lead mines in Austinville. He did not receive an education and could not read or write.[4][5]

His first child, a son named Wesley Allen King, was born on December 15, 1874. He married Wesley's mother, Lucy Jane Portis, on August 4, 1875, at the age of 19.[6] Sherwood and Lucy had 7 more children in the following years: David, Letishia, John, Walter, Sherwood Jr., Emmett, and Jerry. The family lived on a farm near the Lead Mines in Wythe County.[5] Sherwood was widowed after Lucy died prematurely on July 5, 1895. He remarried two months later to Amelia Ann (Porter) Mabe on September 4, 1895.[7] They had no children together but lived with Sherwood's children.[8] By 1900, Sherwood had taught himself how to read with the help of family and friends.[4][8]

Sherwood divorced Amelia some two years after their marriage. He had two sons, Walter and Sherd, with Lucy Jane Mays in 1897 and 1900. He married Lucy on May 4, 1904.[9] They had three daughters together after their marriage, two of whom survived to adulthood: Nancy and Lucy.[10][11] Their daughter Jessie died at the age of 12 as a result of pneumonia.

Sherwood was widowed after Lucy died on April 14, 1924. He died on June 24, 1926, at the age of 69.[1] He was buried in an unmarked grave in IOOF Cemetery.[12]
