William King was born October 5, 1776, in Rochester, Massachusetts, to Consider King and Sarah Palmer. In 1779, the family moved to Hillsdale in eastern New York. His father died when he was nine, in 1786. By 1800, William had married Rebecca Jarvis and moved with his mother and siblings to Albany County, New York. They lived in Rensselaerville until about 1807, when the family moved to Scipio in Cayuga County. William and Rebecca had twelve children by 1825. They were living in Sempronius in 1830 and were back in Genoa by 1840. Sometime between 1840 and 1850, Rebecca died and William moved with his son Myron to a farm on Bean Hill Road in Union, Broome County, New York, where he most likely died before 1855.
