According to the 1900 census, Mary was the mother of 8 children, 7 of whom were living - the one no longer living would be Walter, but only 6 other children have been confirmed.
In 1880 John H Jephson (age 38, Carriage Maker) lived in Newark with his wife Alena (26) and three children: George (4), Hellen (3), and Mamie (1), as well as servant Magie Lee (25).[2]
In 1885 John H Jepson (age 20-60) lived in Newark with his wife Mary M (20-60) and five children: George (5-20), Helen (5-20), Maurice [Mamie] (5-20), John H (5-20), and Walter ([5 or under]), as well as servant Alice Burrett (20-60).[3]
In 1895 John H Jephson (age 20-60) lived in Orange Township, Essex County with his wife Madeline (20-60) and six children: George S (5-20), Helen V (5-20), Mamie C (5-20), John H (5-20), Sarah M (5-20), and Gusta (5 or under), as well as [servant] Alice Fulkinson (20-60).[4]
In 1900 John H Jephson (age 59, Mfg Carriage) lived at 142 Prospect Street in East Orange City with his wife Mary M (46) and six children: George S (25, Clerk Carriage), Helen V (23), Mary C (20), John H (20, Clerk Factory), Sarah M (13, At School), and Gustave F R A (8, At School), as well as servant Florence Pettus (24, Servant) - John & Mary had been married 25 years; Mary was the mother of 8, 7 of whom were still living; John had immigrated to the US in 1855.[5]
In 1905 John H Jephson (age 64, Carriage Manfg) lived in East Orange with his wife Mary (50) and six children: George (29), Helen (27), Mary (25), John (23), Madelene (18), and Gusthoff (12), as well as servant Cathrine [Kushner?] (18).[6]
John Hastings Jephson passed away on 19 Dec 1907 - he is buried at Rosedale Cemetery in Orange.[7]
