The biography above and the one below from the merged profile need to be integrated and all sources preserved.

Lewis, or Louis, was born on 29 January 1790 in Virginia. He was the son of William Jackson, Jr. (1763-18??) and Elizabeth DeMoss (1767-18??) of Hampshire County, Virginia, married in 1786. His family removed about 1800 to Fleming County, Kentucky, then to Monroe County, Indiana about 1816. His family was engage in the salt business. Siblings were Joshua, James, William, Elizabeth, Martha, John, Eliza, Johannah, Henry, Polly and Hannah. Lewis was married to Judith Newcomb between 1810 and 1818 in Indiana. Their children were; William Henry, John Alexander, Joshua E., Martha Jane, Elizabeth Ann and Daniel. Both died at Red Oak, Iowa and both buried in private burying ground at Red Oak, Iowa.[7]

By 1820 he was living in Monroe county, Indiana with a wife and a son.[8] That son may have been born about 1818 in Indiana and may have been named William.

Five counties west and across the state line from Monroe is Edgar county, Illinois, where it appears Lewis was living in 1830.[9]

His wife, 3 sons and two daughters were living with him in DeWitt county of Illinois in 1840, another four counties west of Edgar.[10] These three sons may have been John (1820-1902), Joshua (1822-??) and David (1823-1909). The two daughters were Martha Jane (1825-1917) and Elizabeth Ann (1827-1882).

In 1850 they were still in DeWitt and the census gives the names of each family member. His wife's name is not transcribed, but it is legible in the original image and spelled Judah. His sons were David B (Burgen?), age 8, and Darnell (Daniel?), age 19. The original image shows the name Darnell could be Daniel. Lewis and Darnell/Daniel were farmers.[11]

In 1860 and 1865, Lewis and Judith were living in the Town Of Harp in De Witt county, Illinois and he was still listed as a farmer.[12][13] From these five census records, it is reasonable to list up to seven children; William 1818, John 1820, Joshua 1822, David 1823, Martha 1825, Elizabeth 1827, Daniel 1831, but David B (Burgen) 1842 would be just within Juda's child-bearing years. The older brother also named David and the name Burgen may suggest this younger David was adopted.

It is presumed that Lewis died in DeWitt county shortly after 1865, but before 1870. Judah/Judith was living with her daughter and son-in-law, Martha Jane and John Slover in Red Oak township of Montgomery county, Iowa in 1870 and it is thought that she died there soon after that. No death or burial records have been found for either Lewis or Judah.

Research

There are too many Jacksons in Monroe, Owen, and Brown Counties in Indiana! I think many are related to either Jacob and Mary (DeMoss) Jackson or his brother William and Elizabeth (DeMoss) Jackson. Owen Co (formed 1819) and Monroe Co. (formed 1818) are neighboring counties; Brown Co. was formed from 3 other counties (one was Monroe Co.) in 1836...
William and Elizabeth DeMoss Jackson’s children (again according to message 13094 and birth order uncertain) were

  1. . Joshua
  2. .Louis (Lewis)
  3. . James
  4. . William
  5. . Betsy
  6. . Martha
  7. . John (born 1801-1805?)
  8. . Eliza
  9. . Johanna (Joanna?)
  10. . Henry
  11. . Polly (this is possibly a nickname)
  12. . Hannah (possibly a nickname)
  13. . unknown baby

Assume the children were born between 1785 and 1810 (13 children in 25 years).
I am researching William Jackson, born about 1798 in Kentucky (possibly Fleming Co., KY) who married Britty M. Wilson (born about 1799 in Kentucky; other researchers believe her maiden name was McBride, however the Indiana marriage records say William Jackson married “Birtty” Wilson 21 Jan 1820; whoever typed the online names misspelled Britty). There are no McBrides marrying a William Jackson. The “M” is given as her middle initial in the 1850 Newton Co., Missouri census and it is certainly possible her middle name is McBride. Britty is supposed to be short for Britania, but the researcher who told me this gave no proof. Hope someone can provide more information.
William Jackson may have had 3 sisters who married in Monroe Co., IN:

  1. . Catherine Jackson (1801-1856) married Cornelius Cox 1 Apr 1824
  2. . Elizabeth Jackson (Charlotte “Lottie” Elizabeth) married William Cox on 23 Nov 1830 (brother to Cornelius)
  3. . Joanna A. Jackson married William Davidson 26 Dec 1828
