Biography

Last reference in UK is the 1881 census where he is living on the Old Kent Road in South East London. May have emigrated to the USA - there is an entry on the passenger list of the S S Belgenland which sailed from Bremen to New York in May 1885 for a George Hyland aged 27. He describes himself as a farmer from London, although 'our' George was neither, in fact he was a grocer's assistant originally from Battle in Sussex. However, 'London' and 'farmer' are mutually exclusive; his father James, did work in agriculture for most of his life, and it is very likely that George had learnt about farming from him. Perhaps this was just what he aspired to and he felt he could hold his own on the Prairies.

Furthermore, when my grandmother died, I inherited all the family photos and among them was a late 19th century picture of a young man taken in Brooklyn, NY but unfortunately nobody was able to say who it was. The photograph is quite faded and well-worn, as if it was important to somebody in the family. It was moreover the only picture in the whole collection to be taken outside of England.

Is this George? I think it probably is.

There is some confusion in a number of Ancestry trees with another George Hyland born near Battle (Whatlington) a year or two later and who married a lady called Emma Hawkins. These are obviously not the same person as they both appear separately in the 1871 and 1881 censuses. It turns out however, that this George Hawkins is in fact his cousin once removed.

16/3/14; the 1910 US census lists a George Hyland lodging with a family headed by a William Frey in Hoboken Ward 1, Hudson, New Jersey. He was born in England in 1858 and emigrated in 1884 - this is one year out, but nonetheless very likely that it is the same man. Moreover there were only two people registered in England with the name George Hyland in 1858. The other was born in Kensington, London and in 1911 appears to be resident a couple of miles away in Fulham.

18/10/19 Strangely a George Edward Mepham is baptised in St. Mary's, Battle on 6 June 1858 with no corresponding entry in the general register for that name, so as far as the church is concerned, it seems that they were all still Mephams despite their mother's domestic arrangements.
