Biography

Never seems to have married and was an agricultural labourer most of his life, latterly in Arlington near Eastbourne. There are several Alfred Mephams in the Sussex area at this time, so there is some potential for confusion here.

14/10/19; It has just been pointed out to me by John Cooper that the Battle Parish Register describes him as 'base born child of Sophia Mepham' although unlike the other three 'father unknown' children he wasn't brought up by Sophia and didn't adopt the Hyland name. The name Soane is interesting as it may point the way to the father of Sophia's first four children.
