Looking for George Hyland b. 1858 in Battle, Sussex, England. Emigrant?

A long shot I know, but I've got to try! George Hyland was my great grandfather's younger brother and disappears from any UK listings after the 1881 census.

I inherited all the family photos from my grandmother when she died and among them was a late 19th century picture of a young man taken in Brooklyn, NY but unfortunately nobody was able to say who it was. Although the details don't all fit, there was a George Hyland who arrived in New York c. 1885 but where he went from there, who knows?

Any information would be gratefully received.

Thanks Douglas,

I had seen that but unfortunately none of it tallies. The George Hyland born to James Hyland and Sophia Mepham (they weren't married at that time) was registered in the second quarter of 1858 as evidenced in the census of 1861 where his age is quoted as '3'. This continues in 1871 (13) and the 1881 man in the Old Kent Road (23) so clearly there is no one-off mistake. Also, the individual married in 1888 to Emma Alice Hawkins is demonstrably the wrong man as in the 1871 and 1881 censuses he appears concurrently with 'my George'.

I think given all the circumstances, it is most likely that he did emigrate although he could have been murdered, a paving slab tied round his neck and the body thrown in the river... I think I prefer the former!

Anyway, thanks again for your help.

Derek
