Hunkin Tasmania lost in bush
Wed 27 Jun 1883 A telegram was received in town this morning from Upper Ringarooma, stating that Mr. Joseph Hunkin was supposed to be lost in the bush. Mr. Hunkin left Avoca for Fingal towards the end of May last to inspect and report upon mining properties, and thence went on to Branxholm. He was to have left there on the 13th June for Mount Victoria, and it is surmised that he had reached his destination, visited the several mines, and on proceeding from the Mount to Upper Ringarooma, missed his way, and lost himself in the bush. Mr. Hunkin, however, may have turned off the Upper Ringarooma track to the Black Boy line, and proceeded on to the lately reported reefing discovery situated south of Mount Victoria. I understand that search parties are out, and it is to be hoped that tidings will be obtained of the missing man. Mr. Hunkin is well-known in mining circles as a manager of several claims, but more particularly in connection with visits of inspection to properties in the East, North-east, and West Coasts.[3]
