Walter was born 4 September 1939 in Douglas, Wyoming. His father was Chester James Humphrey, his mother was Frances Bunning Humphrey. He married the mother of his children, Barbara Norris Humphrey on 23 June 1963, in Sacramento, California. Afterward, he and his new wife moved back to Wyoming to live and raise their family.
Walt was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and photographing the wonders of nature in his home state of Wyoming. He instilled in his children a love of the great outdoors and, he encouraged them to take advantage of the bounty of nature.
He passed away at the age of 76, 25 June 2016.
