Biography

George W. Huff was born on Sunday, 08 April 1849, Muskingum County (according to family tradition), Ohio, most likely at the home of his maternal grandparents. He is called G. William Huff in the 1900 Census. He was apparently named for his grandfather, and he may have gotten his middle name from his uncle James William Huff. But there is a Bible record giving his middle name as Washington, so that is probably more accurate.

He was in his teens when the family moved west to Illinois. Although his marriage license was from Piatt County, Illinois, he was married in Moultrie County, Illinois, on Thursday, 07 April 1870, to Harriett Edgecomb (b. 08 August 1854, Lima, Ohio; d. 15 March 1914, Decatur, Illinois), daughter of Robert Edgecomb and Elsa Lewis. The marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. Martin Neher (who also later moved to Crawford Co., Kansas). The marriage license was dated 25 March 1870.

They moved about 1875 to Osage Township, Crawford County, Kansas (northeast of McCune), and appear there in the 1880 Census (E.D. 58, Sheet 8) with their children and also a "servant" named James Crenshaw. In 1883, they lived in Parsons, Labette County, Kansas, but by 1886, they had moved to Neosho County, Kansas.

The Parsons Weekly Sun (Parsons, Kansas) 24 April 1884, Page 1, says that G. W. Huff had bought lots 7 & 8, Block 71 in Parsons for $1,500 (bought from Sarah E. Patterson). https://www.newspapers.com/image/64831603/?terms=huff

The Parsons Weekly Sun (Parsons, Kansas) 13 November 1884, Page 1, says that Geo. W. Huff had sold the same lots 7 & 8 (Block 71) for $1,600. https://www.newspapers.com/image/64832098/?terms=huff

The Parsons Weekly Sun (Parsons, Kansas) 12 September 1889, Page 8, says the Geo. Huff had returned from a three-week visit with relatives in Decatur, Illinois. https://www.newspapers.com/image/59717127/?terms=huff

The Decatur Daily Despatch (Decatur, Illinois) 16 August 1890, Page 4, says that "George W. Huff of Parsons, Kas., was visiting his brother, J. M. Huff of this city." https://www.newspapers.com/image/7297301/?terms=huff

They moved back to Illinois (Decatur or Cerro Gordo) about 1894, and they appear in Decatur (Macon County, Illinois) in the 1900 Census (E.D. 46, Sheet 2), their address being 1902 E. Main Street. George's middle name is given as William in that census, but that is just one of many errors in that entry (his death certificate shows that his middle name was Washington). They appear in the 1910 Census at Decatur, Macon County, Illinois (page 190B, E.D. 114), and they were living on East Eldorado Street at that time. He gave his occupation as packer (at American Hominy Mills where he worked for about 20 years).

At the time of his death, George was living with his daughter Myrtle, but their residence was then at 1440 N. Edward Street. He died on Wednesday, 18 February 1920, at 1:15 P.M., at St. Mary's Hospital, Decatur, Illinois. The cause of death was chronic interstitial nephritis (apparently due to hardening of the arteries). He was buried two days later at Cerro Gordo Cemetery. An obituary appears in the Decatur Herald (19 February 1920; see the FindAGrave source for text of the obituary). Besides being a miller and packer, George had no doubt been a farmer for much of his life before moving to Decatur.

I believe there is a case of mixed-up names here, I think his middle name is actually William, and there is another George Washington Huff, and the two have been confused with each other. Here is my comparison:

Huffs, Charles W Huff and Aquilla Huff, were brothers, both sons of George Huff 1780-1862 and Mary E Mahoney 1787-1864. Both George W Huffs were their father's first sons. Aquilla Huff's son was born in 1842 in Pike Township, Coshocton County, and Charles Huff's son was born seven years later, in 1849, in Virginia Township, Coshocton County, these two townships are no more than 15 miles apart, so Charles would have known the name of his own brother's son. It is very doubtful that they would both name their sons the same name. Aquilla's son's Find-a-grave (ID#25654935) entries make many references to his name being George Washington Huff. Charles's son is clearly listed in the 1900 US Census of Decatur, Macon County, Illinois as "Huff, G William", which is why I believe that his middle name is William, not Washington. 1900 Census link: https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/7602/images/4113782_00308?pId=37031339 If anyone has other source information that indicates his correct middle name, please post it here. Thanks. You make a very good case. Since the 1900 Census seems to be the only record giving his middle name, I have changed the middle name on this profile to William.
