Biography

Joseph Holloway was born about 1605/06 in England. [1] No proof of a link to the family tradition is that they were from Somerset in England, where a Holway House is found in Ilminster, has ever been proven.

It is possible he is the Joseph Holly granted six acres in Dorchester, Massachusetts, on 22 Nov 1634. [2]

It is possible that he is the Jo. Holloway that is seen 29 Apr 1635 on the passenger list of the Elizabeth & Ann, Roger Cooper, Master. [3]

He was a millwright. [1]

In 1640 "Joseph Holloway of Sandwich in New England, millwright aged about thirty five yeares sworn saith upon his oath that about nyne moneths since he had certaine commodities of the wife of Thomas Richards of Weymouth that is to say Kersey at 6s 6d p yard bayes at 4s 2d p yard and bynding lace at 7d a yeard when he came to reckon for it and she did affirme that he had of her three quarters of a yard of kersey more than he had & sayed it was so much upon the booke & would have been payd for so much." Joseph also deposed "That in or about March last past he heard the wife of Thomas Richards of Weymouth speaking of Henry Waltham William Waltham say these words viz, The Walthams are cozeners & cheaters.

Joseph was a freeman in Sandwich in 1643/44 and took the Oath of Fidelity the same year.

At the Plymouth Court of 6 June 1643 Joseph Holly was the complainant in two cases of trespass - one against Joseph Hull and the other against Josiah Cooke.

In 1644 "Rose, the wyfe of Joseph Holly" was ordered to give testimony at the General Court in Plymouth in a case involving John Ellis and his wife. [4]

Marriage

He married in Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts to Rose Holly Allen, [1] [5] eldest daughter of George Allen. [6]

Children

  1. Sarah Holloway m: Joseph Allen
  2. Joseph Holloway m: Mary Hull
  3. Mary Holloway m: Nathaniel FitsRandolph
  4. Experience Holloway m: John Goodspeed
  5. Hopestill Holloway m: Samuel Worden.

Death

He died intestate, and the "Trew inventory of the goods and chattels of the late decease Josepth Holiway of Sandwidg taken by Edward Dillingham and William Newland this 4th of Dessembre 1647" totalled 205 pounds, 6 shillings, 10 pence, but 12 pounds, 12 shillings was in "desparate debts." "Rosse Holiway ... depposed to this Inventory before Mr. Thomas Prence the 30th day of the 10th month Anno 1647." [7]

The inventory of Joseph Holly's estate was taken on 4 Dec 1647 by Edward Dillingham and William Newland. It amounted to L205-6-10. One of his assets was a "two years and a half servis in a boy but hee is a very bad servant." The widow "Rosse" deposed to this inventory on 30th day of the 10th month Anno 1647. [8][9]

His widow Rose married secondly on 19 May 1648 in Sandwich, Barnstable County, Massachusetts to William Newland. [10]

It appears that William Newland assumed an obligation to pay the children of Rose and Joseph, their rightful inheritances when they reached maturity. That obligation was fulfilled by 03 May 1665 when court records [11] show that William had paid 24 pounds each to ...

- Joseph Holley, Jr.
- Mary (wife of Nathaniel FitsRandall)
- Sarah (wife of Joseph Allen)
- Experience Holley
- Hopestill (wife of Samuel Worden).

Newland's last Will [12] named Rose as executrix and his brother-in-law, William Allin as overseer.

Holloway DNA Project

There are 5 men who have taken the YDNA test at Family Tree DNA descend from this man. If you descend from this Holloway family please consider getting a DNA test.

  • Men with the Holloway name should get a 37 marker test from Family Tree DNA. Join the Holloway Project at FTDNA and order a test at the same time. Click the "Join" button and then click "Order Test". Then scroll down to the first group of tests and order the 37 marker YDNA test.
  • Women and non-Holloway men should get an Autosomal DNA test. I recommend getting an Ancestry.com test first and then transfer those results to Family Tree DNA where the project is hosted.

With regards to the comment from Anne B, below, I am happily disconnecting this profile from parents William and Grace - who didn't marry until 1626 (20 years after this Joseph was born).

Anne, I am happy to leave this to those who have done more research on this family than I have.

He isn't the son of William and Grace. Sources do not support this relationship. Objections to disconnecting?

Holley-1102 and Holloway-53 appear to represent the same person because: Although many variations of the name Holley/Holway/Holloway are seen in the historical record, this person is unquestionably the same person as Joseph Holloway, husband of Rose Allen. Rose later married William Newland.

Request merge.

What sources show he was the son of William and Grace? From my reading of sources about the family, they had only two daughters - Grace and Hannah, and no son Timothy is mentioned. There is a Joseph mentioned, but not in connection as a son to William. Source: William Holloway of Taunton, Mass., in 1637, and his descendants, 1586-1949, including those also known as Hallowells and Halloways, descended from his great-great-grandson, William Holloway by Everett H Pendleton, page 8

Merges complete on 242, 1963, and 1640.

Using a birth year of 1605, based on historical deposition in the year 1640 declaring his age at "about thirty-five".

Holloway-53 and Holley-242 appear to represent the same person because: Names are close, wives and daughters are essentially identical, birth dates need to be reconciled
posted by Bob Tonsmeire
Holloway-1963 and Holloway-53 appear to represent the same person because: Same name, same birth year, same father, same wife, same child
posted by Bob Tonsmeire
Holley-242 and Holloway-53 appear to represent the same person because:

Joseph, husband of Rose Allen.

I would also question the connection to father William Holloway - who (from Torrey) married a Grace __?__. Grace m/2 to John Phillips.

Birth date relative to his siblings seems very far off; cannot find any evidence of this connection.
