James, son of James Fife Hill and Rachel McNary,^[1] was born 11 February 1862^[2][3] in Hickory, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Knox Township, Ohio, where his father was a farmer.^[4] The large household included his parents James F. (age 43) and Rachel (38); James W. (8); and his siblings Wm. McNary (18. farmhand), Mary A. (12), Samuel M. (10), Calvin C. (6), Margaret (3) and Thomas M. (five months).^[4]

In 1880, the family lived again in Hickory in Mount Pleasant Township, Pennsylvania.^[5] Eighteen-year-old James Wilson was apprenticed to a tailor,^[5] probably his father, which profession he followed the remainder of his life. He continued to live with his family: James F. (age 53, tailor), Rachel (46), Samuel M. (20, tailor), Calvin C. (16), Maggie J. (13), Thomas M. (10) and Amanda B. (8).^[5]

On 2 June 1892 in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania,^[6] he married Katherine B. Allen, daughter of Thomas C. Allen and Ann H. Devitt.^[7][8][9]

By 1900, the family was living in Homestead outside Pittsburgh, where James was a tailor.^[3] The household included James W. Hill (age 38) and his wife Katie B. (28); their children Dorothy A. (7), Mildred A. (4), and Lloyd J. (1); his mother-in-law Ann H Allen (68); a servant and two lodgers.^[3]

During the next ten years the family had moved across the Monongahela River to Swissvale.^[22] The household had grown to encompass James W. (47, merchant tailor), Kate B. (37), Mildred (14), Dorothy (16), Lloyd (11), Kenneth (7), Roscoe (5) and Richard (2).^[22] Katie reports that she has been the mother to six and all were still living.^[22]
