Biography

Margaret was the daughter of Edward Hawten and Margery Crocker. She was baptised at Swalcliffe, Oxfordshire on 29 November 1561.^[1][2]

Margaret married Henry Howell of Westbury, Buckinghamshire on 13 May 1583 at Swalcliffe, Oxfordshire.^[1][2][3] They had the following children:

• Edward, baptised at Marsh Gibbon, Buckinghamshire on 26 July 1584^[1][2]
• Thomas^[1][2]
• Anthony^[1][2]
• Henry^[1][2]
• Margaret^[1][2]
• Isabel^[1][2]
• Jane^[1][2]

In 1575 Margaret's husband inherited Westbury, Buckinghamshire from his brother John. There followed a legal dispute which seems to have been resolved by 1587 when the manor was settled on Margaret and her husband for life and their heirs thereafter.^[1][2][4]

Henry Howell died on 12 July 1625, leaving his wife a life interest in Westbury.^[5] On 31 October 1626 Margaret was recorded at North Aston, Oxfordshire. Her death date and county are not known, but on 8 June 1638 her son Edward sold Westbury, suggesting that she had died by then.^[1][2][5]
