Jean Hanks was born November 17, 1874, his birth registered in Pouppeville (later called Rayne), Louisiana, to Joseph Hanks and Marie Simon.[1]
In 1880 he lived with them in Lafayette, Louisiana.[2]
Counting the son and daughter of his mother's first marriage, Jean had 9 siblings:
Ursule Simon, also known as Marie Ursule Hanks (1862)[3]
Arthur Simon (Jan. 1864) probably raised by Simon family.
Jean had light brown hair, blue eyes, and was of medium height and weight. [7]
On October 23, 1894, Jean took out a marriage license[8]
and married Carmelite Simon soon after at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iota, Louisiana.[9]
In 1900 they lived in Lafayette, Louisiana, next door to his parents.[14]
Jean moved his family from their home next door to his parents in Lafayette to one they rented next door to Carmelite's parents in Acadia Parish sometime after 1900 and before 1910.[13]
Possibly from complications of their last child's birth in late 1909, Jean's wife apparently became incapacitated by the end of April, 1910. This is suggested by her double listing on the census, at her own home and at the same time at her mother's, next door, presumably so that Edmonia could help take care of her until Carmelite's death in February, 1911.[15][16]
Jean was devastated by his wife's death. His six children went to stay with relatives and Jean never resumed custody of them, and he never remarried. Bernis, the youngest son, and probably all of Jean's daughters, were raised by their Simon grandparents after Carmelite's death.[17]
Jean's youngest child, Ozite, went to live with Corinne and her husband when Corinne married. [18]
It is still not known where the two older boys grew up. But Jean did maintain a relationship with his children. He listed his son Alec on his 1917 draft registration as his "nearest relative."[7]
Jean Hanks died in Crowley, Louisiana, on July 21, 1938 after dinner with Alec and his family. [19]
His youngest granddaughter, Alice Hanks, remembered that he looked around the table at his loved ones just before he passed away and said, "C'est ce bon!" [20]

Jean or John? His name on probably every official record I have seen was spelled 'John.' French was his first (possibly his only) language, and in his lifetime there was a concerted effort by the federal and state governments to assimilate the Cajuns. Therefore 'Jean' was spoken; 'John' was written.
