Biography

Jacob Hanauer has Jewish Roots.
Jacob Hanauer has German Roots.

Jacob was born in 1830 in Bavaria, Germany. He was likely the son of Marks Hanauer and his wife Lena.

He was living with an older brother Louis Hanauer in Randolph county, Arkansas in 1850.[1]

Jacob was a partner with his brother Louis and Daniel in the L. Hanauer & Co. They bought land at a Sheriff's sale in 1852 in Pocahontas in Randolph county.[2]

He married Mary E. Kelly on 31 Jul 1852 in Randolph county, Arkansas.[3] They had a daughter Ella Jane who passed away in Arkansas in October 1855. Mary passed away in 1856.[4] Both are buried in the St. Paul cemetery in Pocahontas, Randolph, Arkansas.[5] In addition, they were the parents of Mary (Hanauer) Hampson.

Jacob was still in his brother's household in Pocahontas in Randolph, Arkansas in 1860.[6] They were listed as merchants on that census.

He married Sarah Winklein on 01 Nov 1860 in Hamilton county, Ohio.[7] They had children. Their oldest daughter, Lena, was born in Pocahontas in Arkansas.

They were in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio in 1870.[8] There was a Joseph Hanauer in the household, age 16 (born 1854 in Arkansas). He was likely the Joseph Louis Hanauer who was the son of Jacob's brother Louis.

He died in 1873.[9][10] He was buried in Walnut Hills Jewish Cemetery in Evanston, Hamilton, Ohio.[11]

His estate was probated in Shelby county, Tennessee where he owned property with his brother Louis Hanauer. Louis applied for and received guardianship of Jacob's minor children, who included Mary (Hanauer) Hampson (child of Jacob's first wife Mary), Lena Hanauer, Belle Hanauer, Hester Hanauer, Flora Hanauer and James Hanauer (Jacob James Hanauer).[12]

Research Questions

A few Ancestry.com family trees list his parents as Max Hanauer / wife Lena or Leah. Max Hanauer and wife Lena appear on the 1850 Cincinnati census. He is listed as born in 1783. Lena was listed as born in 1797. His profession was peddler.

In 1840, there was a ten-year old Jacob Hanauer who emigrated from Bremen to Baltimore on the ship Lucilla.[13] Parents were "Marge" Hanauer (Marks aka Max Hanauer?) and Lena Hanauer. The ages are about the same as the Cincinnati couple. An older boy Joseph Hanauer was also travelling with them, presumably this Jacob's older brother. Their place of birth was listed as Osterling, Bavaria.

Jacob was known to have brothers Louis, Daniel, Phillip, and a sister Therese who married Jacob Hirst.

Hanauer-32 and Hanauer-7 appear to represent the same person because: Same wife and same daughter. Birth years and death years differ. Hanauer-32 may have estimated dates, hence the difference.
