Biography

Jacob Hanauer has Jewish Roots.

Jacob was born in 1872. He was the son of Jacob Hanauer and Sarah Winklein.

He was living with his widowed mother and his siblings in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio in 1880.[1]

In 1918 the Cincinnati city directory listed J. J. Hanauer with the J J Hanauer & Co. of 713 Elm Street in that city. The company was in the business of tailor's trimmings. He and his mother both lived at 3592 Bogart Avenue in Cincinnati. [2]

He was living in the household of his married sister Hester (Hanauer) Hays in 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 in Cincinnati.[3][4][5][6] He was head of household and was living with niece Sarah and grandniece Hester in Cincinnati in 1940.[7]

He passed away in 1947 in Ohio.[8][9] According to his obituary, he was known as "Uncle Jake" and "The Mayor of Elm Street." He was the last retail button dealer at the time in the United States. At the time of his death, he left surviving six nieces and a nephew.

He was buried in Walnut Hills Jewish Cemetery in Cincinnati.[10]
