Biography

Unsourced Biography in The Goodrich Family in America (Lafayette W. Case, M.D., 1889, page 102, #392): [1]

The Goodrich Family in America (1889)

On further investigation, Stephen Goodrich Jr. never served in the military; the Revolutionary War service cited in his biography by Lafayette W. Case in 1889 was that of his father, Captain Stephen Goodrich (1732-1823), [2] and his year of death (1854) in Middlebury, Vermont is attributed to his brother, Amos Goodrich (1764-1854). [3]

Stephen Goodrich Jr., son of Stephen and Dorothy Goodrich, was born on a 50-acre farm outside the extreme southeast corner of the Three Mile lots in South Glastonbury, Hartford, Connecticut that his father bought and moved to in 1759. [4] Stephen was baptized on 28 Dec 1760 at Glastonbury First Congregational parish; [5]

of which he was a member when he married Lois Bidwell, daughter of Joseph Bidwell and Ruth Kelsey [6] at Glastonbury on 06 Mar 1783. [7]

Stephen and Lois settled in South Glastonbury, where in 1786 Stephen was deeded the 25 acre south tract of the homestead of his father, [8] who had moved with the rest of his family to Middlebury, Addison, Vermont. [9]

Goodrich Lands in South Glastonbury

From 1786 through 1794, the family of Stephen Goodrich shared the home of father-in-law Joseph Bidwell, who bought on the same day in 1786 the 25 acre north tract of the 50 acre homestead of Captain Stephen Goodrich; including the house. [10] Stephen sold his 25 acres to Jonathan Bidwell; an uncle of Lois, [11] in early 1795; [12] the year Stephen and his family rejoined the rest of his family in Middlebury, Vermont and Stephen bought his first two land tracts in Middlebury from his brother William Goodrich (tracts 2, 3 in the map). [13] [14] A year later, on 02 Sep 1796, Stephen sold tract 3 to Samuel Miller [15] and bought tract 4; a 100 acre homestead, from Rev. John Barnet, [16] in exchange for tract 2. [17] Another land acquisition was tract 5c; 10.5 acres of 21 acres (tracts 5b + 5c) bought by Stephen Goodrich and William Goodrich from Amos Goodrich on 19 Feb 1805; [18] the same day Amos Goodrich sold 50 acres (tract 5a) to Aaron Goodrich, [19] and bought tract 6; the 205 acre homestead of their father, Captain Stephen Goodrich, on the Middlebury-Salisbury border. [20]

Stephen and Lois remained in Middlebury, where Stephen was a household head in the 1800 US Census, [21] and in the 1810 US Census, [22] until they sold their two properties there by 06 Feb 1811; [23] [24] soon after the death of his mother Dorothy there that year, [25] and moved their family to Locke, Cayuga, New York, [26] where on 20 Feb 1819 they joined the First Congregational Church of Locke with a recommendation letter from John Stoyell of the Sempronius Church of Christ farther to the north, [27] and on 01 Oct 1819 bought 37.5 acres of land on the western border of section 46; east of Chipman Corner Cemetery (now Howell Cemetery). [28]

Section 46 became part of Summer Hill after the Town of Locke had been subdivided into Groton, Tompkins County (south-1817); then into Locke and Summerhill, Cayuga County (north-1831). [29]

Stephen sold his land in Locke to his son-in-law Thomas Chipman in 1823; [30] the year of a quit-claim deed to Amos Goodrich of Middlebury, Vermont regarding lands there of their deceased brother William Goodrich.[31]

Quit-claim deed: Stephen Goodrich of Locke, New York to his brother Amos Goodrich of Middlebury, Vermont (12 May 1823)

This quit-claim deed clears up the confusion raised by his published biography; connecting Stephen Goodrich Jr. with his family, his former residence in Middlebury, Vermont and his final residence in Locke, New York, where he died on 25 Jul 1825, [32] and was buried in Howell Cemetery. [33]
