From 1786 through 1794, the family of Stephen Goodrich shared the home of her father Joseph Bidwell, who bought on the same day in 1786 the 25 acre north tract of the 50 acre homestead of Captain Stephen Goodrich; including the house. [6] Stephen sold his 25 acres to Jonathan Bidwell; an uncle of Lois, [7] in early 1795; [8]

Stephen and Lois remained in Middlebury until they sold their properties there by early 1811, [10] soon after the death of his mother Dorothy there that year, [11] and moved their family to Locke, Cayuga, New York, [12] where in 1819 they joined the First Congregational Church of Locke [13] and purchased land on the western border of section 46.
