Biography

Anne Glemham was the daughter of John Glemham, Esq., of Glemham, Suffolk, and his second wife, Eleanor Brandon.[1][2][3][4][5] Her date and place of birth are unknown and are estimated. Her parents married in 1466 and her mother died in 1480, so she was born sometime during that period.[1]

Anne married Henry Palgrave, Esq., of Norfolk, son of John Palgrave, Esq., of Little Palgrave, Suffolk and Margaret Yelverton.[1][4] The date and place of their marriage is unknown. They had twelve children, including five sons and four daughters:

  • John,[1] eldest son, died without issue before 1524[3]
  • Clement, Esq.,[1] 2nd son, buried at Norwood Brenningham 30 April 1583, will dated 2 February 1575, proved 11 May 1583, married Margery Read (died 1566) and had issue[3][4]
  • James,[1] 3rd son, died without issue[3]
  • Thomas, Gent., married Anne Gunton and had issue[1] (Visitations call her Alice)[3]
  • Henry,[1] died young, before his father[3]
  • Frances, wife of Sir William Pennington,[1] of the North[3]
  • Anne, wife of Humphrey Smalpeece, Gent.,[1] of Hockering, Norfolk[3]
  • Eleanor, a nun at Carrow Abbey,[1][3]
  • Elizabeth,[1] died young[3]
  • 3 others[1]

Henry Palgrave died 20 October 1516, leaving a will dated 11 September 1513, proved 14 January 1517/8. His will named his wife, Anne,[1] as the joint executor with their son, John, and also named children Frances, Eleanor, Anne, Clement, Thomas and James.[3] Both Henry and Anne were buried in the church of Barningham Norwood, Norfolk,[1] where there is a monumental brass for Henry, Anne and their twelve children.[4] Anne's date and place of death are unknown.

The brass to Henry Palgrave has four shields: (1) Palgrave, the lion rampant and gardant; (2) Palgrave impaling Glemham (wife of Henry); (3) Palgrave impaling (device defaced, but probably Yelverton, Henry's mother); and (4) Glemham impaling Brandon (Eleanor, daughter of Sir William Brandon, and mother of the wife of Henry Palgrave).[4]

I will soon be developing this profile as part of Magna Carta trails from Richard Palgrave to 8 surety barons.

The Magna Carta Project has identified this profile as being in a trail between Gateway Ancestor Richard Palgrave-4 and Magna Carta Surety Baron Roger Bigod-2. I will soon be adding the project as a co-manager of this profile so we can track this trail. Thanks.
