Taylor Gardner Gilliam was born about 1797 in Virginia, United States, son of James Gilliam (about 1750–1821) and Frances Hopkins (about 1750–1823).

Taylor named two of his sons after Elders of his church: Jonathan Wiseman and W. C. Bransford.
