Biography

Harriet was born in Farnham Surrey in 1849. She is the younger of the 2 children of John Gillam and Jane Boxall. Harriet was less than 2 years old when her mother passed away.

At the time of the 1861 census, Harriet was living in Farnham with her paternal grandparents.

Harriet married twice during her life. Her first marriage occurred at St Peter's Church Wrecclesham Surrey on 26 June 1869 when, at age 20, she married Thomas Mitchell, a 30 year old bachelor who was working as a labourer. We find no evidence that children came from the marriage.

From sometime before 1881, Harriet's only brother James, who never married, would live with her and Thomas in Farnham and this arrangement would continue into Harriet's second marriage.

Harriet was widowed in 1904 and about 3 years later, on 1 June 1907, she married Frederick Harvey Snelling, a 49 year old bachelor, at St James Church in Rowledge Surrey.

Harriet was widowed for a second time in 1925 and she passed away in Surrey in April 1939 at about age 89. She was interred at St James Church, Rowledge on 17 April 1939.
