John was born in 1769 at Orange Co., NC. to Nicholas and Mary Gibbs, He married Ann Howard in 1797[1] and they had at least four children: Mary, Elizabeth, Matilda, and William. John was a prominent landowner and slave holder in Anderson county and took part in many of the early struggles with the Indians.[2] At the age of 71, John died on 13 August 1840,[3] in Anderson Co, TN, the Grandfather of William Gibbs McAdoo, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury under Woodrow Wilson and later a senator from California.[4]
Notice of his death abstract from an East Tennessee newspaper,1791-1865:"John Gibbs,Esq. departed this life in Anderson County,Tennessee after a protracted illness of 50 days. His disease was apoplexy. He died at 7 o'clock in the morning, on the 13th day of August(1840), in the 71st year of his age. For more than 30 years he filled the office of Justice of the Peace, was Entry Taker, etc.,and once represented this county in the State Legislature. He was a man of strict urbanity of manner, hone stand respected, a kind father, indulgent master, good neighbor and strict friend,lived respected and died lamented." from Bishop - Fentress family tree [5]
John McAdoo married John Gibbs' eldest daughter, Mary Ann. William Gibbs McAdoo, Secretary of the Treasury under Woodrow Wilson, was the grandson of John McAdoo and the great grandson of John Gibbs
