Biography

Carmela Cerniglia, age 47 (b. 1847), the midwife, reports the birth in via Birtone, #19, to Biagia Jovino, wife of Michelangelo Gennaro, borgese, in their home, of a daughter named Maria on 23 April 1894. Witnesses are Leoluca d’Anna, 35, contadino (peasant), and Ignazio Cortimiglia, 47, murifabbro (bricklayer). Her father is far from the city and could not report the birth himself.[1]

Maria is baptized the next day. Her godparents are Michelangelo Birtone and Gaetana Rao, a married couple.[2]

Maria marries Francesco di Palermo, son of Vincenzo, on 30 July 1911 in Corleone.[1][3]

Frank and Maria have two known children, Vincenzo (1912) and Michael Angelo (1914), both born in Corleone.

Francesco di Palermo, married, 21 years old (b. 1893), a joiner by profession, travels with the known gangster Ignazio Dragna, arriving in New York on 14 March 1914 on the Sant’Anna. Stefano leaves his sister, and Rosalia her sister in law, the same Giuseppa Russo, of Corleone. Ignazio leaves his father, “as above,” meaning the lines naming Giuseppa Russo. Francesco leaves his wife, Maria Gennaro. Ignazio is joining his brother Gaetano Dragna at 337 E 106th St, New York.
