Biography

Caroline Gannon was born 1 September 1854 near Evansville, Rock, Wisconsin, the eldest of 11 children of Emmaline and Thomas Gannon. [1][2][3]

She lived with her parents and two siblings in Brooklyn, Green, Wisconsin in 1860.[2]

She attended the common schools and later, the seminary at Evansville.

Caroline Gannon and John Henry King married on 25 February 1874 in Rock County, Wisconsin. [4][5]They lived in Union Township, Rock, Wisconsin in 1880.[6]

Their sons were born in Wisconsin and a daughter was born in South Dakota:[1]

Vernell King (1875-1952)
Ernest King (1877-1972)
John M. King (1879-1879)
Irven King (1880-1932)
Georgie (King) Boehmer (1885-1974)

In 1881, the John King family and his brother, James King, left their home in Rock County, Wisconsin, for Dakota territory. They settled on government land in what is now Fairview Township, Hanson County. They built a "pleasant farmstead" where they raised their children. [3][7]

John and Caroline King's three sons married three Blunt sisters, daughters of Charlotte (Cordray) and James Madison Blunt: Vernell "Vern" King married Lucy Blunt, Ernest King married Nellie Blunt, and Irven King married Julia Blunt, and their sister, Georgie King married Frank Boehmer. A 4th Blunt daughter, Lydia Louise, married Caroline's brother, Henry Philip Gannon.

In 1910, John and Caroline moved to Pipestone, Minnesota, where Caroline's father, Thomas Gannon, had been living with her siblings, Clara and Frank.[8]Her father died there in 1911. [9]

John and Caroline returned to South Dakota shortly before John's death at their home in Alexandria on 28 August 1916. [10] Caroline never remarried and she remained in Alexandria until her death. [11] [12] [13][14][15]

"She lived a long, upright and useful life, endearing herself to a host of friends, whose contact with her is a treasured memory. She was a member of the Presbyterian church, a charter members of Endeavor Rebekah lodge at Fulton, a member of Celestial chapter O.E.S. of Alexandria, and of the Degree of Honor." [3]

"Caroline suffered severe injury in a fall on October 15, last year, when her hip was broken. Although she recovered sufficiently to get around the house a little, she never recovered from the injury and its shock to her system." [3]

Caroline King died 3 April 1941 in Alexandria, Hanson, South Dakota. [16]Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. Walter Magee; pallbearers were five grandsons: Everett King, Herbert King, Herman Boehmer, Woodrow Boehmer, Brandon Mitchell, and nephew, James Gannon. She is buried with her husband at Green Hill Cemetery, Alexandria, Hanson County, South Dakota. [3] [17][1]
