Biography
Isaac Friedenheit has Jewish Roots.
Isaac Friedenheit has German Roots.
Isaac was a son of Gerson Friedenheit and Fannie (Winklein) Friedenheit, born in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1860.
In 1860, Gerson, Fanny, their newborn son Isaac, and Gerson's fifty-seven-year-old mother Fanny were residing in St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri. Gerson owned a clothing store and had real estate valued at $700 and personal property valued at $2,000.[1]
His family moved to Manhattan, New York, when he was a child, in about 1865 or 1866. The 1870 U.S. Census recorded his father as George Fridenburg, age 36. He was a native of Bavaria and a U.S. citizen, working in the retail clothing business. His wife Fanny Fridenburg was recorded as 29 years old and born in Pennsylvania. Their children were recorded as Isaac, 10, Hattie, 8, and Sophie, 7, all born in Missouri; and Rachel, 5, and Simon, 2, both born in New York. Gerson Friedenheit seems to have fairly prosperous at this time. He reported $5000 in real estate and the household included a domestic servant.[2]
As a young man, Isaac went into the ribbon business. The 1880 U.S. Census recorded Isaac Friedenheit, age 20, in his parents household on East 55th St. in Manhattan, New York. His occupation was given as manufacturer of ribbons.[3] The Trow's New York City Directory published in 1889 lists Isaac Friedenheit, ribbons, living at 352 E. 116th, with his business at 111 Grand. Gerson Friedenheit, insurance, is listed at the same home address, with his business at 109 Grand.[4]
Isaac Friedenheit married Esther Goldsmith in Manhattan, New York City, on 17 November 1897. According to the marriage record, he was 37 years old, a son of Gerson Friedenheit and Fannie Winkler, and was born in St. Joseph, Missouri. Esther was 20, a daughter of Mayer Goldsmith and Therese Weil, and was born in New York.[5]
The 1900 U.S. Census recorded Isaac Friedenheit, 40, a merchant, and wife Ester G. Friedenheit, 23, on East 80th St. in Manhattan, New York City, with one-year-old son Myron G. Friedenheit (born September 1888). Isaac was said to be born in April 1860 in New York to a father born in Germany and a mother born in New York (this birthplace information is wrong). He and Ester had been married 2 years and Ester had had one child, who was living.[6]
In March 1934, seventy-four-year-old Isaac and Esther sailed first class from San Francisco, California, to the Territory of Hawaii on the S. S. President Hoover.[7]
