William H. Duggan was born on July 4, 1850 in Llangendeirne, Carmarthenshire, Wales, United Kingdom, son of James Duggan (1828–1905) and Elizabeth Jones (~1831–1873). His birth was recorded in the third quarter of 1850 report for the county. [1]He was the firstborn of his parents, who eventually had 10 more children. [2]
The family was enumerated in Llangendeirne during the 1851 Census for Wales[3][4] but has not been found for the 1861 Census for anywhere in the UK.
Accompanying his parents and most of his siblings, William immigrated to the United States in the winter of 1863-1864. They departed Liverpool on the Inman Line Screw Steamship "City of London" in December 1863 and arrived in New York on 15 January 1864.[5]
According to family stories, the family joined their Uncle Henry in Barclay directly after arrival in the US. The mining company developing Barclay
By the 1870 Census William was working in the mines with his father and brothers Jacob and James.[6]
William was naturalized as a citizen on 6 DEC 1875. in
Towanda, Bradford County, PA.<[5]
By the 1880 Census William and Minnie had formed their household and they had two sons, James and William.[8] Their only daughter Eleanor was born in Barclay in 1881.
William and Minnie moved the family to Bernice in Sullivan County, PA by the birth of their 4th child, Harry in September of 1888.
By the birth of their 5th child Arthur on 8 December 1890, William and Minnie had moved on to Anita in Jefferson County, PA. They were there as late as April 1892.[9]
William finally moved his family to Bradford City in McKean County, PA before 4 July 1897 when his youngest son Emerson was born. This is documented by the 1900 Census[10] The residence in 1900 was at 30 Sanford Street.
About 1904, William brought his family back to Sayre to visit his father. The family posed for a group portrait.
In the1910 Census, William and Minnie were living at 54 Sanford Street. Three adjacent houses were occupied by their children's families. [11] They remained at 54 Sanford St in the 1920 Census[12]. The house remained their residence through the rest of their lives.
William passed away on 20 APR 1925 in Bradford, McKean, Pennsylvania, United States.[13]. He is buried in Bradford. [14]
