Giovanni Cusimano (“Gusmano”) is born on 20 September 1847 in Corleone, the son of Antonino Cusimano and Giovanna Marino.[1] He is named after his paternal grandfather.
Giovanni marries Antonina Vutera (also "Gutera"), daughter of Vincenzo Vutera and the late Maria di Miceli, on 17 September 1871 in Corleone.[2]
Antonina and Giovanni have at least four children: Giovanna (1872), Maria (1878), Antonino (1881), and Leoluca (1890).
Giovanna is born 13 December 1872 and baptized the next day in Corleone. Her godparents are Francesco Dragna and Anna Vutera, a married couple.[3]
Maria is born in May 1878, according to the 1900 census.
Antonino is born 6 June 1881 and baptized the next day in Corleone. His godparents are Antonino Zabbia and Giuseppa Paternostro, a married couple.[4]
Leoluca is born around 1891, based on his age at emigration.
The son of Antonino's godparents emigrates to New Orleans in 1894.
Giovannina "Jennie" Cusimano marries Vincenzo Vutera on 30 Dec 1894 in Donaldsonville, Louisiana.[5]
On the SS Scindia sailing from Palermo on 1 June 1897 and arriving in the port of New York on 23 June, fifteen passengers from Corleone appear together on the manifest. Twelve are bound for the port of New Orleans, including:
4. Giovanni Cusimano, 50 (b. 1847), connected with a bracket to lines 5-7, meeting Vincenzo Vutera in White Castle, Louisiana
5. Antonino Cusimano, 16 (b. 1881)
6. Leoluca Cusimano, 6 (b. 1891)
7. Antonina Vutera, 46 (b. 1851)[6]
The Vincenzo Vutera they're meeting could be either of Antonina's two nephews, first cousins of the same name who emigrated together in 1893. The other one returns to Corleone by 1906. They are most likely meeting Giovannina's future husband.
Maria marries Vincenzo Schillaci on July 5 1897 in Corleone.[7]
In the 1900 federal census of the First Ward of Iberville Parish, Louisiana, taken 11 June, Philippo Quaglino's family and the Cusimano family are neighbors:
John Cusimano, born in July 1845, age 53, and his wife of 32 years, Antonina, born in November 1851, age 48. She has had 4 children, all living. At home are their children Tony, born in April 1881, age 19; Lucas, born in February 1890, age 10; Oneida (this is Giovanna), born in January 1873, age 27, and Mary, born in May 1878, age 22. John emigrated in 1897 and is a farm laborer. Tony is a farm laborer.[8]
Anthony Cusimano Sr., born in 1882 in Italy, dies 11 May 1962. He is buried in Roselawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Baton Rouge.[9]
