Biography

Flag of Northamptonshire (adopted 2014)
Thomas Crowson was born in Northamptonshire, England.

Thomas was born on 10 March 1864 in the village of Helpstone, Northamptonshire, England. His parents were Henry Crowson and Elizabeth Franklin, known as Betsey. He was baptised in Helpstone exactly a month after his birth.

Thomas was a general labourer and had a variety of jobs throughout his life. He married Sarah Eady in Helpstone on 4 Dec 1883. His older brother, Frederick Crowson had married Sarah's older sister, Mary Eady in Helpstone in 1880.

Between 1884 and 1886, Thomas and Sarah moved from Helpstone to Barleythorpe in Rutland. Between 1890 and 1894, they moved again, this time to Oakham, also in Rutland. In Barleythorpe, Thomas worked as a groom. In Oakham, he was a builder's labourer.

Thomas and Sarah had 11 children between 1882 and 1905. One (Thomas Henry born and died 1895) died in infancy. The remainder were all at home on the night the 1911 census was taken. The oldest ones were born in Helpstone, the middle ones in Barleythorpe and the younger ones in Oakham. The youngest child, James Edward Crowson, was born in Helpstone where the family had returned between 1901 and 1905. In the 1911 census, the two youngest male children were described as grandsons: son had been deleted and replaced by grandson in both cases. However, the birth records in the GRO show that both were registered as sons of Thomas and Mary. Similarly, the youngest daughter, Gracie's relationship to Thomas and Sarah had been altered to granddaughter.

The oldest child in the family was called Walter. He was born in 1882 before Thomas and Sarah were married. Therefore it is possible that Thomas was not Walter's father and that Walter was illegitimate. No mother's maiden surname is shown in his GRO birth record.

Thomas died in 1947. His death was recorded in the Peterborough area. His last address, at the time of the 1939 England Register was Peterborough Rd, Helpstone. At that time he was 75 and still working as a general labourer. It is not currently known where or when Sarah died.
