Biography

Thomas's birthdate and place are uncertain. He may have been born in Yorkshire.

The marriage of Thomas Croasdale and Agnes Hathernthwaite of Wyersidd on 3 mo. 1, 1664, (ie. 1 May 1664) was recorded by the Lancaster (England) Monthly Meeting of Friends.[1][2] The couple lived at New Hay, Yorkshire, England, and were part of the Settle Monthly Meeting.[2]

Thomas and Agnes, along with with their children, arrived with the group of Quaker families named in the Settle Certificate, given by Settle Monthly Meeting, aboard Lamb in 1682.

21/22 April 1682 Thomas Croasdale, of New Hay, yeoman, received a 1000 acre land grant in Pennsylvania. [3] Shortly thereafter, Thomas, Agness and six children and other families from the Settle Meeting were given certificates to leave,[2] which they did July 1682, on the "Lamb" part of William Penn's fleet that settled Pennsylvania.[4]

They settled in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, on 500 acres, on Neshaminy Creek. They were part of the Middletown Friends Meeting.[2]

Thomas died 9th mo. 2, 1684. Agnes was administrator of his estate valued at £47. 09. 00, and administration was granted on 10 December (Quaker 10th month) 1684.[5] Agnes died 8 mo. 20, 1686. Sons William and John executed the estate valued at £106. 5. 0.[2]

Children

Thomas and Agnes had the following children, all born in Yorkshire, England[6]

  1. William, born 7th day 12 month 1664, a Quaker date equating to 7 February 1665.[7][8] d. 1715; m. (1) 2m 10, 1690, Elizabeth Hayhurst. Their daughter Agnes m. Richard Hill. William m. (2) Saray Wilford 2m 5 1698.[2]

Marah married 2nd John Wildman and had Mercy and Elizabeth Wildman.[2] John was buried on the 16th day of the tenth month 1706, a Quaker date equating to 16 December 1706.[9]

Research Notes

Thomas Croasdale is an ancestor approved for membership by the Welcome Society.

Death Date

Also found Died in Neshaminy, Bucks Co. Pa.

FindMyPast has a transcript of a list of Croasdale deaths and burials compiled for the Historical Society Of Pennsylvania. This gives a death date for a Thomas Croasdale of 2 September 1682 rather than 1684.[14] Whoever compiled the list may have mistaken the Quaker "month month" for September, and may have mistaken the year. Thomas Maxwell Potts' book Our Family History[2] and Blanche Moore Haines' Ancestry of Sharpless Moore and Rachel (Roberts) Moore...[15]give documentary evidence from Thomas Croasdale's will and the administration of his estate pointing fairly firmly to a death year of 1684.

ERRORS: Quaker marriage date of 01 da., 03 mo., 1664 converts to 01 May 1664 (not March). Also, if the couple's marriage was recorded in the Lancaster Monthly Meeting, and if the couple did not arrive in the colonies aboard "Lamb" until 1682 bearing a certificate of transfer from the Settle Monthly Meeting, then it goes to reason that they were married in England (not Wrightstown, Bucks, Pennsylvania).
