Biography

Emery was born in 1844. He served in the 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company F during the Civil War. Per the 1890 Veteran’s census his right leg was shot off and per his Civil War Pension Documents, he lost his right leg above the knee.

The Story of a Thousand by Albion Winegar Tourgée, page 407 and Appendices, published by S. McGerald & Son, 1896

Enlisted into Company F of the 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 6, 1862 at age 18 as Private. He was captured with the forage train near Murfreesboro on January 21, 1863 and later paroled. He was wounded at the Battle of Perryville on October 8, 1862 and again at the Battle of Chickamauga on September 19, 1863. He was discharged on March 18, 1865 for disability.

In this book, Emery is included in a list of soldiers who were provided with an artificial limb by the U. S. government. The document notes he was a Private in Company F of the 105th Ohio, his residence was Mentor, Ohio and he was provided with an artificial leg manufactured by Small & McMillan at a cost of $75 on September 12, 1865.

Dear juliaett I have not reseived any leters from you since I got back to camp Emery got one from his folks yesterday and they rote that you had gon up to your Sisters to stay three or four weeks so I suppose you have not reseived my leters of late however i hear from you once in a while and hear that you are well So I feel contented about you
The Regiment went out on a Scouting expatition last tusday and was going to be gon six days it has not got back yet but we expect it in to day the Colonel ordered us parolled men to go out with the Regiment when it went but only three of them went out I cant find out what is to be don with us yet but I expect that we will be compeled to go to doing duty again before we ar exchanged ...

last Sunday a man belonging to Co A was braught to camp for trying to desert he was taken prisinor the Same time I was and runaway from columbus he is in the guard house now I dont no what is to be don with him thair has ben a number Shot here this Sumer for desertion I hope thair will be no one Shot in this regiment I Should hate to See any of our boys Shot Emery Crawford has got Sore eyes it wil be bad on them marching in the dust all the boys are feeling wel now in our company Emery was over to See Lon Sunday he and Tom Casey are wel I have got to pack up my napSack and get ready for inspection at four o clock ...

... we had a great many wounded but not but a fu killed thoes in our co was E Crawford Severly in the ankel and will probably have to have his leg taken off O Dimmick [i.e., Pvt. Orlando Dimmick, Co. F, 105th Ohio Infantry] wounded in the hand Corp King [i.e., Corp. John Harvey King, Co. F, 105th Ohio Infantry] in the leg and H. F. March [i.e., Pvt. Henry March, Co. F, 105th Ohio Infantry] also in the leg and R. B. Barlas [i.e., Pvt. Robert Barlass, Co. F, 105th Ohio Infantry] Woodard [i.e., Pvt. Dwight H. Woodard, Co. F, 105th Ohio Infantry] was wounded but I dont no whare the rest of us got off all right a Small Shot hit my right Shoe just above the Sole and went through just enough to make a mark on my foot we retreated back about two milds Stayed untill about darck and went back to or near the plaice we had faught it being my turn I went out on picket and Stayed untill the next morning and was relieved ...
... but charging to far we got through their lines and they tryed to close in on us but as we had cut through of cours we could cut our way out again and did So loading and firing all the time through the charge our los was very Small loosing but ten men in the charge Co F loss was C. F, 105th Ohio Infantry] I Suppose they wer wounded and fel in the hands of the enamy as we of course had to leave the field the wounded of the day before was at a house and Some of them fel in the hands of the Rebels I am Sorey for the boys I Should like to See Emery and all the rest of them ...
