Biography

Caleb was born in 1825.[1] The church records show he was baptized on July 13 but do not indicate the birth date, however the 1901 census states July 13 as his birth date.[2] While census records are not always accurate, it is the only date we have available.

He married Sarah Ann Lohnes in 1850.[3] Caleb and Sarah had a very large family. She died in 1886 and Caleb remarried again to Amelia Schnare (Young), a widow, in 1887.[4] His occupation was a farmer as indicated on the census reports but as indicated below he was obviously active in the fishing industry also. He died in 1911.[5]

In 1873 Caleb is listed as the owner of the "Caleb Corkum", a schooner of 51 tons built in 1871 in LaHave and registered in Lunenburg.[6] He appears to have sold it soon after as in 1875 the registry was transferred to Halifax and then to Newfoundland.[7] Caleb appears to have been quite financially successful as in 1901 when St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Middle LaHave was constructed, he donated the bell and in 1909 donated $1,000 toward the church debt[8] which would have a substantial amount at that time.
