Biography

I grew up in the small community of Middle LaHave, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia along the east side of the LaHave River about 9 miles from Bridgewater. My father was a self employed carpenter and you could say I "grew up" in his workshop along with my younger brothers. I worked with him during summer vacations when in high school and for a year after graduation. The carpentry skills came in very useful later in life whenever I did renovations in my own home.

In 1970, I got a job in the accounting department of Riverport Seafoods Ltd., not far from home, and was there for nearly 10 years. I then moved to Halifax as an accountant in the audio visual industry working for Backman Vidcom for 33 years until temporarily retiring in 2016. I went back as purchasing agent part-time in 2018. It was during that retirement with time on my hands that I got interested in my family genealogy. But as of 2021 I'm back to full retirement again with more time for digging up (pun intended) ancestors. I have posted some Corkum family history and interesting relatives on my web site (see Genealogy menu) as well as many links to possible useful genealogy sites, etc.

My interest naturally is in those to whom I am directly related. I am usually not researching their spouses' parents or siblings, etc. In my database I'm not interested just in building numbers of relatives ... I want to learn something about as many as I can so that takes more time. It's nice when someone is more than just a name and dates in a list. Sometimes, however you're lucky to find that much.

For anyone interested in the Corkum family history, please refer to the Genealogy menu on my web site. We have a very interesting history.

Although I've been adding profiles to WikiTree, I have much more that's not on WikiTree yet. If you are interested in seeing more of the wider Corkum family tree (that I've found so far), I use MyHeritage Family Tree Builder and it includes an online tree at their web site, which is hidden behind a paywall (Google won't find it) however with the direct link you are able to see it but deceased persons only. The direct link to the tree is https://www.myheritage.com/site-300011361/corkum-family. If you are related and would like to see more including living people, message me your email and how you are related and I will send you an "invite" that will let you create a free login as a "site member" to access the full tree. (Ignore any MyHeritage requests to create a paid membership ... you don't need that to see my tree.)

Advance Directive

I saw WikiTree's page on this subject and since I have now started adding numerous profiles of my extended family to WikiTree, it makes some sense to include this statement. I am 70 at this date and expect to be around for some years to come (I hope) ... I've still a lot of genealogy research left to do ... but no one knows when their time may be up, especially today. So at such point that I may be unable to be contacted (possibly deceased or otherwise incapacitated) I authorize WikiTree to transfer management of any of my profiles to anyone willing to look after them. I have no descendants or any immediate family that would have the interest to do that.

I'm looking at the profile of https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Corkum-58, and I'm curious. Almost all the online trees i can find agree he was born 1794 to Peter and Margaret. But it looks like there are two other John Corkums born within a couple years of 1794. In particular, one born 1792 and baptized in the Anglican church (where John married). Are there any other reasons not to assume the Anglican 1792 John was born Anglican?

Hi, Rod,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Thanks, but the only reason I got the certification was so I could create three profiles. I'd asked someone else to do it last summer but it wasn't done. Everything else I'm doing is after that time - my family history on this side of the ocean started in Nova Scotia in 1752. Could you review the three profiles and see if I have them done properly please? They are Von_Gorkum-21, Von_Gorkum-22 and Von_Gorkum-23. The locations are obviously not formatted properly as Germany as a country didn't exist then. I have no idea about German history of that time as it was constantly changing ... I just copied that from the parent profile.

You're welcome - I've been away from the Corkum ones for awhile. I went down a "bunny trail" on my tree last summer following my 5th GGF's eldest daughter who married a Lohnes so I ended up adding many Lohnes and Lohnes-related profiles. That branch turned up nearly 3,000 people of which I've added the deceased ones to WikiTree and looks like still a few hundred more to find before I reach the end and can get back to real Corkum people again.

Hi Rod, I made some edits to a few of your profiles and I'll probably make some more. Just to explain, it's really important to add locations, especially birth locations, to the data fields, even if it's an inference (like maybe they were born in LaHave, but you only know they were baptized in Lunenburg). The reason being, it makes searching, matching, and project work for everyone on Wikitree if they don't have to filter through many dozens of similar profiles from all over the world.

Thanks, I'll take a look at my profiles and see what I can update there. Been slowly adding more as working through my database. The one issue with "LaHave" is that many of the old records are really annoying. They often just used the term "LaHave" which can be a very wide general area and didn't specify the actual community. There is LaHave on the west side of the river, also West LaHave. There is Upper LaHave, Middle LaHave, and East LaHave (earlier known as Parks Creek) on the east side of the river, as well as Lower LaHave at the mouth of the river, and Branch LaHave at the top of the river near Bridgewater. And changing community boundaries didn't help either. So I guess I sort of have to try to figure out in which community the people actually lived, since births normally occurred at home. Most of mine so far I think are likely Middle or East (those who didn't move away). I haven't gotten into the branches on the other side of the river yet. Just yesterday I finished flipping through a 1400 page file of church B/M/D records and often communities were named so that may help.

Hi and welcome to WikiTree!

WikiTree is different from other genealogy websites because our goal is to have one profile per person. That means we will all share ancestors and work together as a collaborative team! The Honor Code helps keep everything functioning smoothly as we work on our SHARED tree.

You should have received an email with links you can use to get started. Once you confirm your email address, you'll have an option to volunteer to add information to WikiTree. Begin with tags for your own profile. Tags are surnames, locations, concepts, etc. in which you're interested.

When you volunteer, one of our Greeters will confirm your membership. Then you'll be able to add to the tree!

We're really glad you're here!
