Biography

Birth and Parents

Robert was the son of John Conyers and Elizabeth de Aton.[1] He was said to be 25 at his father's death in 1396, pointing to a birth date of about 1371. He may have been born in County Durham, where his father had lands.[2][3][4]

Marriage and Children

Robert married Isabel Pert, daughter of William Pert and Joan le Scrope.[1][2][3][4][5] They had the following children, all named in his Will:[6]

Lands

Robert held lands in County Durham and Yorkshire (including Sockburn which straddled Durham and Yorkshire[7]). His marriage brought him property in Lincolnshire.[2][3]

Offices Held

Robert was Sheriff of County Durham from 1401 to 1406.[2][3][8] He is recorded as escheator in County Durham in 1404.[9]

Death

Robert died on 25 or 26 April 1431. He was buried at Sockburn, County Durham. His wife pre-deceased him.[2][3] His son Christopher was a minor at his death, and custody of his lands was granted on 12 July 1431 to Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland, and John Middleton.[10]

His will, dated 18 April 1431,[4] was proved on 18 May 1431.[2][3][6]

Research Notes

Death Date

The Harleian Society edition of Yorkshire Visitations wrongly gives Robert's death date as 22 April 1437.[1]

Christopher and Elizabeth are NOT recognized as brother or sister of Robert Conyers, or as children of John Conyers and Elizabeth Aton, by Douglas Richardson. Marlyn Lewis claims a sister of Robert Conyers named Elizabeth, Elizabeth Conyers, but the sources are private and not universally recognized for her marriages, parents, etc.

Dorothy is NOT recognized as a daughter of Robert Conyers and Isabel Pert by Richardson.
