Anne Clifford's birth date is unknown (about 1495 is a plausible estimate). She was the daughter of Sir Henry Clifford, 10th Lord de Clifford,[1][2][3] known as the Shepherd Lord,[4] and his 1st wife Anne St John.[1][2][5] She was quite possibly born at Skipton, Yorkshire where her father had his main seat[6] and where her mother was buried.[4]
1st Marriage and Issue
Before 1515, Anne married (as his 2nd wife) Robert Clifton, Esq. of Clifton, Nottinghamshire, the son and heir of Gervase Clifton, Knt. and his first wife Agnes (Anne), daughter of Sir Walter Griffith.[1][2] They had four children:[2]
On 6 March 1518, six months after Robert's death on 3 Sep 1517,[2] Anne wrote a letter to her brother Henry Clifford, 1st Earl of Cumberland for financial assistance:[5][7]
Right wyrchypfull brodere, I hartyly recowmawnd me unto yow, besechyng yow to be gud brodere to me . . . for here hays bene all my husbandes hu[n]kkylles & broders and I hayd nobody to speke in all my cawse bot my selfe. 2nd Marriage and Issue
Anne married second, Ralph Melford of Arnold, Esq. in about 1520. They had 6 children:[1][2][5]
1) George,[1][2][5] b. before 1524 (he was old enough to be appointed executor in his father's 1546 will[5])
Anne presumably died before her 2nd husband, Ralph Melford, wrote his will on 6 Jan 1546 since she is not mentioned.[1][2][5]
Research Notes
Anne's birth year is based on a single online source, an unsourced family tree. However, it does fall in line with years of birth of her other siblings. No other source could be found at this time.
The exact order of birth of Anne and Robert's children is unknown. It is known that Gervase was their eldest son and when Robert died on 9 Sep 1517, Anne was left with two children Dorothy and Gervase (based on the research of Leslie Mahle).[5] This would imply that Barbara was already married to William Jackson and Robert died young. Further research is required to confirm their order and find their birth years.
The order of birth of Anne and Ralph's children is also unknown. However, if the order that they are listed in their father's will is accurate (which follows the known order for George, Thomas and Mary) then the above order is correct.
