Biography

John was born in 1843. He married Emma Jellyman in 1865 ^[1] He passed away in 1870, accidently drowned at age 26 ^[2] His wife gave birth to his youngest son three days later

We learn from the Nelson Colonist that John Harris Ching, about 27 years of age, a farmer at Wakapuaka, was drowned at the Rocks last Wednesday evening. The deceased was coming round the Rocks on horseback in a few inches depth of water, when the horse suddenly shied, and man and horse went into deep -water. The horse came ashore, but the body of his rider was not recovered in time to restore animation. An inquest was held; and a verdict of accidental death returned; ^[3]

John was buried in Seaview Cemetery, Nelson, New Zealand.^[4]
