Biography

Johnathan King was born in Henfield, Sussex, England.

Birth

Johnathan was born in 1841, probably in Albourne, Sussex but there is no GRO registration. According to marriage data his father was William Burtenshaw King.

In the 1851 England Census^[1] there is a Johnathan Burtenshaw (King?) (age 10) born in Albourne and living in Cuckfield. He is the son of William Burtenshaw (age 42 - an agricultural labourer) and Maria (age 39). Siblings present are William (age 12), Maria (age 7), Henry (age 3) and Amos (babe). The Census data does not include a surname King, but as Johnathan's father is William Burtenshaw King on the marriage documents and they are in Albourne at the correct time .......

Marriage and Children

Johnathan married^[2][3] Mary Ann Goble on 8 July 1865 at Albourne, Sussex. There is also a FreeReg record of the marriage^[4] which shows the marriage was at Albourne: St. Bartholomew.

Johnathan and Mary Ann had three children. The first two were born in Steyning District (probably at Albourne, Sussex: Alfred^[5] (born in 1865) and Fanny^[6] (born 1867). Henry was born in 1869 but no GRO record has yet been found for Henry.

Johnathan died^[7] in Steyning, Sussex. Johnathon's death was posibly the result of an accident in 1869. The accident was possibly at Blackhand Common. Johnathan was buried^[8] on 4 December 1869 at Albourne: St Bartholomew.

The 1871 Census^[9] was completed by Mary Ann (age 27). Her husband Johnathon was probably away working. They were living at Henfield and her three children present were: Alfred (age 5), Fanny (age 4) and Henry (age 1).
