Giuseppa Catania is born 13 February 1885 and baptized the next day. She is the daughter of Leoluca Catania and Vincenza Pomilla. Her godparents are Leoluca Pomilla and his unmarried sister, Lucia.[1]
Open issue: A 1903 manifest matching Giuseppa's name, age, and city of birth indicates that she is married.
On the Citta di Napoli sailing from Palermo on 1 October 1903 and arriving in New York on 15 October:
336. Giuseppa Catania, 18, married, from Corleone, sails alone to New York to join her brother Andrea at 332 E. 53rd St.[3]
Giuseppa marries Liborio Bellomo ("Leborio Bellowe"), age 39 (b. 1879), a widower, born in Italy, the son of Salvatore Bellomo and Marianna Nicolosi ("Nicolaso"), on 23 September 1918 in Manhattan.[4]
Giuseppa and Liborio have two children:
Marianna, born 12 November 1919 in NY, and
Leoluca, born 1 February 1922 in Italy.
Liborio also has a son, Salvatore, from his first marriage. Liborio appears on travel manifests in the company of known narcotics traffickers Nicolo’ Guastella and Paolo Sciortino in 1926. His son from his first marriage is a reputed Genovese Family soldier. Salvatore's son, Liborio, called Barney, is the boss of the Genovese Family in 2019.
In 1927, when Liborio petitions for US citizenship, Salvatore lives with his stepmother and half-siblings in Corleone.[5]
An air passenger manifest dates 20 March 1948, embarking in Rome and disembarking in New York City, passenger #3 is Salvatore Bellomo, age 33 (b. 1915), US citizen. Going to 751 E. 187th St, Bronx NY
Passenger #4 is scribbled out but was going to the same address. This may be Giuseppa Catania, Salvatore's stepmother.[6] She is 63 (b. 1885), a match for her age at marriage to Liborio, and Italian.[7]
