Biography

Liborio Bellomo is born 27 May 1879 and baptized the next day in Corleone. He is the son of Giuseppe Salvatore Bellomo and Marianna Nicolosi. His godparents are Vito Liggio and Vincenza, his sister, both unmarried.

The manifest from a 1926 voyage of the Patria indicates Liborio has lived in the United States, from 1914 to 1925.

These three passengers appear on a 1913 manifest traveling from Palermo to New York:

Liborio Bellomo, Salvatore Bellomo, and Vincenzo Bellomo[1]

A margin note in his baptismal record says that Liborio marries Biagia di Blanda on 7 June 1914 in the chiesa di S. Lucia on East 104th St., in New York.[2] This is the first of two known marriages for Liborio, both confirmed in the civil records for New York City.

Liborio Bellomo, age 33 (b. 1881) born in Italy, the son of Salvatore Bellomo and Marianna Nicolosi, marries Biagia Diblanda, age 26 (b. 1888), born in Italy, the daughter of Girolamo Diblanda and Calogera Tirrita, on 7 June 1914 in Manhattan.[3]

Liborio is widowered and remarries in 1918.

Liborio Bellomo ("Leborio Bellowe"), age 39 (b. 1879), a widower, born in Italy, the son of Salvatore Bellomo and Marianna Nicolosi ("Nicolaso"), marries Giuseppa Catania, age 33 (b. 1885), born in Italy, the daughter of Leoluca Catania and Vincenza Pomilla ("Pennella"), on 23 September 1918 in Manhattan.[4]

Liborio’s second wife connects him through marriage to Mafia boss Tommy Gagliano, whose wife is Giuseppa Pomilla. Giuseppa Catania and Gagliano’s wife are first cousins.

Liborio names three children in his 1927 naturalization petition:

  1. Salvatore, born 25 April 1915 in New York,
  2. Marianna, born 12 November 1919 in New York, and
  3. Leoluca, born 1 February 1922 in Italy.

Based on the dates of Liborio's marriages, Salvatore, the eldest, named after Liborio's father, is his son with Biagia, his first wife; Marianna and Leoluca, named after Liborio's mother and Giuseppa's father, are Liborio's children with his second wife. A 1937 travel manifest confirms that Leoluca is Giuseppa's son.

In his registration for the draft for WWI, Liborio Bellomo, serial no. 4727, order no. 1282, living at 405 West 18th St., NYC., age 39, born 27 March 1879 in Italy. Liborio is a shoemaker with his own business, from his home. His nearest relative is Joe Bellomo (probably his brother, Gioachino) at the same address. Liborio is of medium height and build with brown eyes and black hair.[5]

On 24 April 1923, Liborio Bellomo, age 44 (b. 1879), married, arrives in New York on the Canada. He is married, born in Corleone, and leaves his wife Giuseppa Catania in Corleone. He is meeting his brother in law, Salvatore Bellomo, at 232 East 748 St. (74th St)[6]

On the SS Patria, sailing from Marseilles on 5 March 1926:

17. Liborio Bellomo, 47 (b. 1879), married, Italian, shoemaker, last resided in New York, leaves his wife Giuseppa Catania in Corleone, is destined for New York City. He is carrying $250 (about $3500 in 2019[7]). He resided in the US 1914-1925. He is joining his brother in law Salvatore Bellomo at 232 E 74th St., NY. Born in Corleone.

18. Giovanni Mucera, 27 (b. 1899), married, merchant, Italian, last resided in Palermo, leaves his wife Nunzia Raccuglia there at #19 via Mazzarese. He is destined for either New York City or Palermo: New York is typed in, Palermo written above, but the original is not overwritten or crossed out. He is carrying $200 and joining his cousin Lorenzo Billitteri at 526 E 14th St., NY. Born in Palermo.[8]

Bellomo and Mucera, above, both planned to sail on a different voyage of the Patria, leaving Palermo on 10 March 1926. Their names are crossed out and a typed list at bottom confirms they did not sail.[9]

The larger party with whom Bellomo and Mucera intended to travel on the tenth, and indeed traveled with on the fifth of March aboard the Patria, include known drug traffickers Nicolo’ Guastella and Paolo Sciortino, both with close ties to the San Jose', California Mafia, controlled by the Bonanno Family. Also with them is one other man from Corleone, Concetto Antonino Cannella.

Marseilles is an important location in narcotics trafficking. The year is also significant in Mafia history because it is when the purge of Mafia from Sicily carried out by the Fascists is at its highest intensity.

Liborio declares his intend to naturalize in 1930. Petition for citizenship No. 201247. Southern District of NY. He lives at 169 92nd St NY at this time and is a shoemaker by profession. He was born in Corleone on 27 May 1879. He declared his intention on 16 May 1930 in the same district. His wife is Giuseppa, born in Corleone in 1889. He has three children: Salvatore, born 25 April 1915 in NY, Marianna, born 12 November 1919 in NY, and Leoluca, born 1 February 1922 in Italy. They all reside in Italy.

Liborio last lived in Corleone, he immigrated from Palermo to NY on 23 March 1926 aboard the Patria. He has lived in New York continuously since that time.

Witnesses to his petition are Salvatore Bellomo (his brother-in-law) of the same home address, a shoemaker, and Giuseppe Bellomo (Liborio's younger brother), a manufacturer of slippers, living at 21-37 74th St., Jackson Hts, LI. Signed 1 October 1927.[10]

On the SS Saturnia sailing from Palermo on 8 January 1932 and arriving in the port of New York on 19 January 1933 (this is probably an incorrect arrival year), a list of US citizens on board includes

6. Salvatore Bellomo, 17, single, born in NYC on 4 April 1915. Handwritten on the form is the information on when he was naturalized, 10/17/32 or 11/22/32 in the consulate in Palermo. He is going to his father Liborio at 169 E. 92nd St, NYC.[11]

Liborio's younger son joins him as World War II is raging in Europe.

On the SS Vulcania, sailing from Palermo on 15 November 1937, Leoluca Bellomo is the first passenger listed on the manifest. He is the only one from Corleone: he was born in Corleone and last resided there. Age 16 (b. 1921---he is nearly 18), he is single, a mason by profession.[12]

Leoluca’s mother is Giuseppa Catania. He leaves her in Italy and is going to NYC to join his father, Liborio Bellomo, at 288 E. 152nd St. According to the manifest, Leoluca intends to reside permanently in the US and become a US citizen. He is just four feet tall, with a dark complexion, brown hair and eyes.[13]

Liborio Bellomo of 407 E 116th St., NY, a 63 year old man born 7 May 1879 in Sicily, registers for the draft for WWII. He owns a butcher shop at 2129 1st Av. His contact person is Leo Bellomo (his son) at the same home address.[14]

A match for Liborio is on this manifest. The return address is not valid.

On the SS Marine Perch sailing from Palermo on 3 December 1947 and arriving on 15 December in New York, a list of US citizens aboard includes

6. Liborio Bellomo, 68 (b. 1879), married, naturalized in the US Dist Court of NY on 2/6/33, going to 725 S. Blvd Brooklyn.[15]

Death of Liborio

Liborio dies at age 93 in February 1972. He was born 27 May 1879 and last lived in the Bronx.[16]

Salvatore dies in January 1980 at age 65. He last resided in the Bronx, 10465.[17]
