Biography

Caterina Castro (or lo Cascio) is born and baptized 19 July 1805 in Corleone, named after her maternal grandmother. She is the daughter of Carmelo Castro and Anna Cataudo. Her godparents are Maestro Giuseppe and Giacinta Valenti, a married couple.

In 1807, Caterina appears at age two (b. 1805) in the stato delle anime, a Church census, living with her parents and brothers on the strada grande di S. Elena, in Corleone. One of their neighbors is the home of Francesca Grizzaffi, a widow.

Caterina marries Francesco Governali on 4 May 1823. She is sixteen years old. Her father has died by this time, and her mother is living.

Caterina and Francesco have at least nine children: two daughters named Anna Maria (1827 and 1833), two sons named Leoluca (1830 and 1840), Vincenza (1834), Rosalia (1836), Vita (1837), Vincenzo (1843), and Antonino (1844).

The first daughter named Anna Maria is born and baptized on 28 April 1827, named after her paternal grandmother, as is traditional for the first born daughter. Her godparents are Leoluca la Terrusa and Giuseppa Paternostro, who are not married. She is presumed to have died before her sister is born in 1833.

The first son named Leoluca is born and baptized 15 October 1830, named after his paternal grandfather. His godparents are Giuseppe and Giuseppa di Fulco, a married couple. The same day, they stand as godparents to Gioachino Oliveri.

Leoluca dies on 11 January 1832 at a year and three months of age.

The second daughter named Anna Maria is born and baptized on 4 March 1833. Her godparents are Giuseppe Lione and Francesca Listi, who are not married.

Vincenza is born and baptized on 25 December 1834. Her godparents are Giuseppe and Oliva di Miceli, a married couple.

Rosalia is born and baptized on 7 October 1836. Her godparents are Rosario and Anna Oliveri, brother and sister.

Rosalia dies at six days of age.

Vita is born and baptized on 3 September 1837. Her godparents are Paolo Patti and Giuseppa Patti, wife of Giuseppe.

The second son named Leoluca is born 22 August 1840 and baptized the next day. His godparents are Vincenzo Jannazzo and Maria Frillesti, wife of Vincenzo.

He dies on 24 July 1841, at eleven months of age.

Vincenzo is born and baptized on 28 March 1843. His godparents are Giovanni Grizzaffi and Anna Pomara. Vincenzo dies on 19 January 1844 at nine months of age.

Antonino is born and baptized on 5 November 1844. His godparents are Carmelo and Salvatrice Cinquemani, who are not married. They are likely Carmelo and his thirteen year old daughter.

Anna Maria marries at age 14, on 17 October 1847, to Bernardo Gaglianello.

Anna Maria dies, reportedly at age 18 (she is 17) on 16 December 1850. She is survived by her husband, and both her parents.

Vita marries Giuseppe Bordonaro on 15 June 1851.

Caterina dies, reportedly at age 55 (she is 57) on 17 January 1863.

Francesco dies at age 75 (b. 1793) on 7 September 1868.

Vita dies at age 42 (b. 1836) on 15 June 1878. Her husband, Giuseppe, survives her. Their infant son, Luciano, dies the following month.
