Biography

Giuseppe Cascio was born 7 November 1894 to Antonino Cascio, age 23, pastajuolo (pasta maker?), and Anna Ragusa, living at #3 via Disceza Capo Maestro in Corleone.

The church record says that Joseph Cascio, son of Antonino Cascio and Anna Ragusa, is born on 6 November. He is baptized Josephum on 10 November 1894. His godparents are Biagio and Giovanna Arsena.

At the time of his birth, his parents were not yet married in the civil record. Their Church marriage is dated 27 October 1894, less than two weeks before Giuseppe's birth.

Giuseppe's civil birth notice says of Giuseppe "dallo suo unione con donna non maritata, non parenti, ne affine con lui, nei gradi, che ostano al riconozcimento," basically that he was born from a woman not married or related, precluding his recognition. However in the margin it says Giuseppe "e stato qual figlio legitimato da Cascio Antonino e Ragusa Anna per sus sequente matrimonio oggi celebrato ed iscritto in quest'uffizio cal numbero cinque - Corleone ventidue Jennaro milleottocentonovantacinque"--that he was "like a son" and legitimate due to the subsequent marriage of his parents, 22 January 1895.

Gli sposi allo presenza delgi stezzi testimoni hanno esposto altresi che dallo loro unione naturale naeque un figlio, che come nato de madre ignota fu denunciato dallo sposo il setti Novembre ultimo scorso aquesto Ufficiale di Stato Civile, e l'appello Giuseppe Cascio, e mi hanno dichiarato che eol presenti atto lo riconoscono per prognio figlio allo effetto dello suo legittimazione. Letto il presenta atto a tutti li'intervenuti, si e firmato da me solamenti, avendo asserito gli sposi, i loro genitori, ed i testimoni di non sapere serivere.

This seems to say that the bride and groom have already have a son, who was denounced by her husband last November. This present act recognizes the son of Giuseppe Cascio and renders him legitimate.

In 1898, Anna, Antonino, and Maria immigrate to the United States. Arriving 21 February 1898 on the S.S. Scindia, which sailed from Palermo 27 January 1898, these three passengers are listed together, and are the only ones from Corleone:

23. Antonino Cascio, 28, married, servant 24. Maria Cascio, no age given on manifest, 15 months on text version, not married, servant 25. Anna Ragusa, 25, married, servant

Their destination: Marianna Provenzano (looks more like Trovenzano), 1576 Avenue between 80th and 81st St, New York.

Giuseppe does not travel with them. His younger sister, Maria Serafina, travels with them and Giuseppe stays behind.

In 1901, Giuseppe immigrates with his grandmother and uncle on the S.S. Marco Minghetti sailing from Napoli 26 June 1901, and arriving 12 July 1901 in New York.

According to Tony Masiello's entry on the FindAGrave website, Giuseppe is murdered in New York City 25 December 1924. His wife (whose name is not known at this time) gives birth to a daughter the same day.
