Maria Serafina Cascio is the daughter of Antonino Cascio and Anna Ragusa. Maria Serafina was born in Corleone: on 22 October 1896, according to the baptismal record. Her godparents are Salvator Ragusa and Rosa Provenzano (unmarried).[1]
In 1898, Anna, Antonino, and Maria immigrate to the United States. Arriving 21 February 1898 on the S.S. Scindia, which sailed from Palermo 27 January 1898, these three passengers are listed together, and are the only ones from Corleone:
23. Antonino Cascio, 28, married, servant 24. Maria Cascio, no age given on manifest, 15 months on text version, not married, servant 25. Anna Ragusa, 25, married, servant
Their destination: Marianna Provenzano (looks more like Trovenzano), 1576 Avenue between 80th and 81st St, New York.[2]
Open issue: Though the names match, and Antonino's age is right, Anna, born around 1876 per her marriage record, should be 22 in 1898, not 25. Their son Giuseppe does not travel with them, suggesting he has died in early childhood. Maria, who travels with them, may be Maria Serafina, or that child may have died and this one born the next year.
A margin note on the baptismal record of Salvatore Cardella, born 1892 in Corleone, says he marries Serafina Cascio di Antonio of Corleone on 10 February 1917 in New York.[3] The NYC Municipal Archives says they marry on 26 August 1915.[4]
