John was born in 1708 in Virginia. he was the son of John Carter (1674-1750) and Margaret Todd (1676-1775)
In 1727 in Virginia he first married Susannah Payne (1710-1745). Together they had 4 sons:

His 2nd marriage was in 1733 in Virginia to Elizabeth Armistead (1716-1764). Together they had 11 children:
