Baker-53780 12 Feb 2023 - The 4 children of Sarah (Kenyon) Carter were entitled to estate of their grandparents: Abraham Kenyon & Elizabeth (Waddington) Kenyon - both died in King George Co., Virginia. The records go back to a great grandmother, Margaret (Tomison) Waddington. (All these records are on microfilm - at FHL, Salt Lake City)

After the death of John Carter in 1783 - his children Robert & Elizabeth Matilda died, never married. A lawsuit (a friendly lawsuit you could call it) to distribute their shares. It so clearly lists the descendants of this John Carter. And seperates them from the other Carters. (The suit is on microfilm)

Research Notes

Content below copied from http://www.devintimber.org/getperson.php?personID=I67920:

1783, Dec 18 - John Carter's Will, Will book E, pg 40 in Spotsylvania Co. dated May 9, 1778; Executors bond dated Dec 18, 1783; Witnesses M. Buckner, Richard Loury. Executors: Sons William & John Carter, Thomas Colson, & JOSEPH BROCK.

Legessee: wife Hannah; son Robert, 100 hundred pounds for education; son John in trust for the use of my granddaughter Sarah Kenyon Thomas, two negroes; son-in-law Rice Curtis and Frances his wife during their lives 300 acres of land whereone they now live, after their death to be equally divided among all their children; stock and household furniture to be divided among my five younger children (not named); all the rest of my estate to be equally divided among all my children, except that if my daughter Martha should die without issue, her portion to be divided among the other children. ----Codicil to his Will - written Oct 13, 1783, witnesses Edward Herndon and John Mitchell, recites, "whereas since making the within will, my daughter Elizabeth Matilda has been born, she shall be considered and have an equal share in the division of my estate with my five younger children."

(page 560) NOTES: ---- Most records show him with two wives:

1)Elizabeth Armistead and had children:
  1. William b. 1740, Frances who married Rice Curtis Jr. , Robert, & John Carter b. abt. 1750 and sent to England for education
2)Hannah Chew and had children
  1. Margaret b. Jan 14, 1771 who married Zachariah Taliaferro;
  2. Lucy Carter b. 1775 who marrie Burton Taliaferro; Martha Matilda b.bef 1783 (see codicil);

His Will mentions 5 younger children, but does not name them. I believe Bailey is one of them, b.1743; -----"Genealogies of Virginia Families"/Wm. & Mary Quarterly, Vol 1/John Dorman pg 610. (their information came from the Joseph Lyon Miller book "Capt. Thomas Carter & his Descendants". It states John b.1715 and his brother George moved to Spotsylvania Co, VA. They were sons of Thomas Carter d.1776 Christ Church Parish, who was the son of Edward Carter D. 1743 Christ Church Parish, who was the son of Thomas Carter who married Katherine Dale. But, many researchers have said this information is incorrect. That this John Carter b. abt. 1715 was the son of John Carter b.1674 & Margaret Todd, and he was the son of Thomas & Katherine Dale. I am looking for the proof.

Children of JOHN CARTER and 2)HANNAH CHEW are:

i. FRANCES5 CARTER, m. RICE CURTIS JR..
ii. ROBERT CARTER.
iii. WILLIAM CARTER, b. 1740. 2.
iv. BAILEY CARTER?, b. Abt. August 1743, Spotsylvania Co, VA; d. Aft. February 1811, Montgomery Co, VA.
v. JOHN CARTER, b. Abt. 1758; d. February 18, 1841, VA; m. (JOHN CARTER) FRANCES.
vi. MARGARET CARTER, b. January 14, 1771; m. ZACHARIAH TALIAFARRO.
vii. LUCY CARTER, b. 1775; m. BURTON TALIAFARRO.
viii. MARTHA MATHILDA CARTER, b. Aft. 1778.
